Debra Siela has been an assistant professor in the School of Nursing since 1996 and before that was an instructor since 1990. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Deb is an Indiana native, although she lived in southern California for thirteen years during the late 1970s through the 1980s. Her bedside clinical experience includes working as a staff nurse in intensive care and emergency department nursing for over twenty-five years.
Deb has been a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or an advanced practice nurse since 1980. Her clinical focus has been working with patients who have pulmonary disorders/illness and critical care. She is currently working one day per week at Ball Memorial Hospital as the CNS for the intensive care unit.
Deb is also active in conducting research with patients with pulmonary disorders and illness and critical care nursing issues. Her work has included research regarding dyspnea perceptions of people with COPD and patients receiving mechanical ventilation. She is currently a co-investigator in survey research regarding family presence during CPR that includes nurses, physicians, and patients.
She is active in many professional nursing organizations. Deb is a past-president of the Respiratory Nursing Society. She is active in the American Association of Critical Care Nursing (AACN) and recently served as a member of the selection committee for the distinguished researcher lecturer for NTI 2006. She also reviews research abstracts for the annual research conference of the Midwest Nursing Research Society.
Deb also enjoys her teaching role. She is a student advocate and mentors students throughout the undergraduate program. She continually searches for better methods on enabling students to critically think and look at the “big picture” as they learn to provide care for patients and clients.
She also enjoys teaching graduate level students and learns from their experiences as nurses in the process. In addition, she is coordinating the new adult health clinical nurse specialist track (CNS) for BSU graduate nursing students in our master’s program.
