| Marsha Burden joined Ball State University as an instructor in the School of Nursing in 1999. She teaches undergraduate courses, and her main focus is psychiatric nursing. Before coming to Ball State, Marsha worked as a staff nurse. Areas of working experience include medical-surgical, obstetrics, orthopedics, post-coronary, coronary-intensive care unit, geriatric unit, and for the last 12 years, in psychiatric nursing. She was a faculty member in a licensed practical nursing program prior to teaching at Ball State.
Marsha's philosophy in nursing education is student focused. Through collaboration between the School of Nursing and the clinical site, she works closely with students and staff to ensure that the student obtains the best clinical experience possible. An example of this is seen through patient education. Through collaboration, the student and staff at one of the psychiatric facilities developed PowerPoint teaching modules that were placed on hand-held computers that can be accessed by patients in the psychiatric unit.
Another example is the development of the "Caring Corner" that is located in the corridor outside the faculty offices. This corner is a place where students can come to get chocolate, cookies, snacks, candy, words of encouragement, or just someone to listen anytime they feel they need it. The corner has a home-like atmosphere.
Marsha has a strong interest in cultural diversity. She annually participates in an international nursing clinical experience in Jamaica. This allows nursing students to earn clinical hours in undergraduate community health, pediatrics, maternal health, management courses, or in various graduate-nursing courses. Marsha was recently appointed as a committee member of the Psychiatric Nursing Committee in Jamaica. The purpose of the committee is to educate the Jamaican people about mental health. Her main function for the committee is to develop, implement, and evaluate a workshop for Jamaican nurses who are not currently working in psychiatric nursing. She has taken courses towards her doctrol degree in Adult and Community Education.
