History: This scholarship was created and funded by Hamer and Phyllis Shafer, with additional contributions from the family and friends of Sarah (Sally) Catherine Gibson in Novemeber 1993. Mrs.Gibson was a Ball State alumnus with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She served as president of the BSU Nursing Alumni Association and was an active member of Sigma Theta Tau. Mrs.Gibson worked in critical care, the coronary care unit, and both inpatient and outpatient services. She especially loved th epersonal hands-on element of patient care.

Requirements: Applicants must be non-traditional students accepted by the Nursing Program with a minimum GPA of atleast 2.8. Prefernce is given to students interested in direct patient care. This award is renewable for a second year.
