Workshop Resources

Remote Workshop

Couldn't make it to the workshop?  You can still participate!  Review the instructions below, download the appropriate PDF files, complete a packet and return it to CAP:IC.  Input from the design community is essential in these guidelines, which will be adopted for the entire Regional Center zoning area!

Introduction

The workshop team has selected ten sites/blocks in Critical Issue Area 2, BioCrossroads.  These were selected because they represent prototypical issues, such as street type and context.  The idea is you produce a hypothetical development on the site that  takes into account the real-life issues that impact that site.  By doing these, we will be able to extrapolate critical guidelines relevant to those issues.

Step 1: Download Booklet

Download the Critical Issue Area Analysis/Issue Booklet, in PDF Format.

Step 2: Download Site

Download a Site Packet, in PDF Format, by selecting a site from the map below.
Print this packet on 11x17 paper.  The packet is scaled, so it is important to turn off any scaling, "fit to page" or "shrink large pages" options.

Step 3: Register with CAP:IC

Using this quick online form, register your remote participation with CAP:IC.  This way we know what work is still out there to anticipate.

Step 4: Menu

Your concept will explore how development of public rights-of-way differ based on the type of district they are in and the types of corridors that border them. If the menu is not completed, select one district type for your concept and one corridor type for each of the public rights-of-way bordering your site (ROW A, B, C, D). Review the workshop analysis book and any supplemental materials to learn about each district and corridor type.

Step 5: Review Booklet: Site Analysis

Review the workshop analysis booklet to learn about the constraints, opportunities, and plans in existence that impact your site. Your concept should acknowledge the real-life characteristics facing the site.

Step 6: Develop Site Scenario

Complete the Site Packet for Each Scenario
  • 1 Site Plan

Develop a plan-view concept and extensively label and explain the issues and elements contained in your plan view. The concept should cover the area high-lighted in the aerial photograph, including the public rights-of-way that border the site.

Develop a plan-view scenario using trace-paper overlay.  Note the 1"-100' scale and 20' grid.

Be sure to label (the what) and explain (the why) the issues and elements contained in your drawing.  For example, if you have a mid-block mini-park, tell us why there should be such a park.  Keep in mind the ultimate goal is a set of guidelines, and we need to be able to extrapolate your site information to broader guidelines.

  • 3-4 Section Views

For each public right-of-way (street, railroad, park, stream) develop a section view, again labeling and explaining.  A section view should be developed for each ROW.

  • 1 Isometric View

Develop a 3-D isometric view of your concept. Extensively label and explain the issues and elements contained in your concept.  Note the 1"-100' scale and 20' grid.
