Douglas Farr, the founding principal and director of planning
of Farr Associates, is a graduate of the University of
Michigan and Columbia University. He serves on professional
and civic committees including co-chair of the Congress for
The New Urbanism Environmental Task Force, past chair of the
AIA Committee on the Environment, and past Co-Chair of the
City of Chicago Energy Code Task Force.
Founded in 1990, Farr Associates is an architecture, planning
and preservation firm with work in town planning and urban
design, sustainable architecture and historic preservation.
The firm focuses on designing sustainable places—vibrant,
dense, convenient, mixed-use developments where environmental
health is a cornerstone of design and function—places that
filter and store storm water, generate their own power,
preserve a view of the stars, and integrate natural systems
and buildings. Places people love.
Farr Associates has received national recognition as the
forefront of the "Second Generation" of New Urbanists
(Architectural Record, January 1997) for grounding traditional
town planning with environmental concern and implementation
strategies such as transit-oriented redevelopment, grassroots
planning initiatives, sustainable community development,
focused area planning, and congestion mitigation and air
quality. In 2003, the firm received the American Institute of
Architects Top Ten Green Award for the Chicago Center for
Green Technology.
