Committee Description

Irvington has significant and historic parks and open spaces. In 1909 the City purchased Ellenberger Woods for the future Ellenberger Park. Pleasant Run Parkway, which connects Ellenberger Park to Garfield Park, was planned by the prominent landscape architect George Kessler in 1909. Ellenberger Parkway was laid out north of Ellenberger Park. Pleasant Run Golf Course is an important feature in the northeast part of the neighborhood. Irving Circle was a part of the original neighborhood plan and contains a bust of Washington Irving, the town’s namesake. The Kile Oak, the second largest Burr Oak tree in the state, is located in the southern portion of the neighborhood. The proposed Pennsy Trail is located two blocks south of Washington Street.

Possible Topics:

  • Are there sections of the neighborhood that have a deficiency of open space?

  • What recreational uses should the Pennsy Trail accommodate?

  • What should be done to protect the neighborhood’s significant and historic parks and open spaces?
