Committee Description

From the very start, Irvington has been a planned community. Irvington was founded in 1873 by Jacob Julian and Sylvester Johnson, who developed 300 acres into residential plots four miles east of Indianapolis. The unusual curved layout is attributed to the Ohio suburb of Glendale.

The Irvington Historic District, which covers a portion of the Irvington neighborhood, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Residents are now actively soliciting support for the declaration of a local historic district.

Possible Topics:

  • What role should the history of the neighborhood play in present day Irvington?

  • What are the important features of Irvington’s past that should be preserved? Discuss commercial buildings, homes, apartments, public buildings, street patterns and open spaces.

  • What are the significant features of Irvington architecture?

  • What can new development be adapted to be compatible with existing development?
