Herron Foundry

March 22, 2005 Update

The site has been fully characterized, and two underground storage tanks were previously been removed. Currently, the site is undergoing a two part process of further investigation and remediation.

The further investigation portion of the current phase of environmental activity on the site included installation of three ground water monitoring wells. These ground water monitoring wells will allow sampling of the ground water on the site for heavy metals, and petroleum contaminants.

The remediation portion is to remove lead and heavy metal impacted soils. Removal of this soil will allow the site to meet IDEM RISC Commercial cleanup standards while not disturbing the current structures on the site.

The City expects to receive a Site Status Letter allowing commercial redevelopment of the site upon IDEM's acknowledgment that the contaminated soil has been properly remediated and that the ground water impacts satisfy IDEM RISC commercial goals.
