Rotary Gateway Partnership Selects Team

The year-long design competition for a monumental gateway in the area of I65 & West Street resulted in the December decision to select the Kevin Parsons & Associates Team and their design concept. It was a difficult choice to make since all five final submissions were posted by strong locally-led teams, several of which included national and international members.

NINebark’s “Twin Towers, ” BDMD’s “Triumph” Statue, CBA’s “Ribbon” Corridor, and Ratio’s “Arch Tunnel” all contained unique elements which would benefit many major areas of ingress and egress in the Indianapolis core area. (See all proposals here)

Several panels of experts and strategic stakeholders; and public exhibits held at City Market, Bethel AME Church, the Madame Walker Museum, the Center for Sports Medicine, at Rotary and Indiana University’s Emerging Technologies Center provided input on all aspects of the proposals. A vote taken over the net through this website yielded close to 400 responses – beginning in September. It is still receiving responses. Please continue to register your thoughts and opinions as the Gateway Partnership effort progresses!

“Gateway Circle,” the panelists’ final selection and popular choice, sought to embody an familiar symbol for our city given a fresh and innovative approach that would knit together many themes, groups and images already present on the community scene. From a tire at the Speedway to downtown’s Monument Circle, For several reasons we have always been dubbed “the Circle City.” It is felt that this concept will build on yet transform an existing image for the 21st century.

Partners and other groups involved with the process were many, and spent hours reviewing materials and attending meetings to give opinions and information about their perspectives on the project. Many have agreed to continue to advise and support as the Gateway becomes reality.

Organizations and people led by the City of Indianapolis and its areas of Community Development, Planning, and Public Works include: IUPUI, BOS Community Development Corporation, Clarian Health Partners, Veolia Water, Citizen’s Gas, Walker Information, Sensory Technologies, IUPUI Center for Politics and the Environment, IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science, Indianapolis Ball State Center, Ruth Lilly Health Education Center, JMK Development, IPS, Indianapolis Downtown Inc., KIBI, Indiana Avenue and Canal Cultural Districts, ICVA, IUETC, White River State Park, Ransom Place and Fayette Street Neighborhood Associations, MEDIC and the Flanner Area, Madame Walker Center, Crispus Attucks and the African Heritage Center, the Arts Council’s Public Arts Program, and Lamson & Fisk Engineering.

Rotarians deeply involved in the effort include its officers, led by previous presidents and current President Elaine Bedel, board members and foundation, Environment & Beautification Committee members: Lenore Tedesco, Jim Kienle, Jeff Mader, Joe Gaafar, Mark Winzenread, Jennifer Hobbs, Mike Conly, Ron Baker, Mark Blade, Linda Brimmer, Kevin Markey, and Wendy Boyle. The club itself is kept up-to-date and asked periodically to render its comments on the project.

Part of this I-65 & West Street Gateway’s future lies in its concurrent relationship to other major economic, cultural and community developments occurring in the community. The Partnership was created from a variety of community-wide entities to ensure that this would happen.

Selected from many locations identified by the 2004-5 Mayor’s Workgroup on Gateways because of its dynamic convergence of educational, medical, historical and economic factors, I-65 and West Street represents one major entry/departure point to Indianapolis among the 15 to 30 other places discussed by the original workgroup.

No matter the scale or type of gateway effort being planned, each passes through similar phases and requirements in its development. Rotary is particularly proud to sponsor this website through the Ball State Center which the city informs and where the city has placed its Gateways Toolkit so that any citizens group may find the information and process needed to bring its concepts into being.

The Rotary Gateways Partnership will keep updating everyone through bulletins and articles on this website. If you would like to receive further detailed information or wish to contact the project, please indicate your interest in the Gateways interactive comment area of this website.
