Due to space limitations, the College of Architecture and Planning uses the fall, spring, and summer semesters of the academic year to schedule First-Year Program courses and offers admission to successful applicants in three different tracks: fall studio, spring studio, and accelerated studio. Please note that students in all three entry tracks receive the same instruction and are ready to pursue their second year of study.
Fall Studio Track
Students begin their studies in the fall semester and may complete all required courses of the First-Year Program during the fall and spring semesters.
Spring Studio Track
Students select courses that meet the University Core Curriculum requirements during the fall semester but do not begin the required design and design communications studio course sequences until the spring semester. Students in this track are required to continue through the summer semester to complete those course sequences. The extra semester allows students to complete more University Core Curriculum courses in the first year and provides them with a semester to adjust to college life before beginning the rigorous studio courses.
Approximately one-fourth of the positions in this track are not filled until the conclusion of the fall semester. Candidates who initially were not competitive in the applicant pool or who applied too late may begin their studies at Ball State and reapply for admission. In other words, if you are initially declined admission to CAP or miss the initial deadline, the college offers a limited second opportunity to reapply. Decisions on reapplicants to the Spring Entry Track are made after fall semester grades are posted.
Accelerated Studio Track
This special track is open only to Ball State students or other transfer students who will have completed a minimum of 48 hours of college study prior to enrollment. An intensive program of study compresses the content of first-year professional course work into two five-week terms offered during the summer. (Note: CAP's summer semester schedule differs slightly from the university's schedule.) The summer semester schedule for 2009:
- May 18 to June 19: First Session
- June 22 to June 26: Break
- June 29 to July 31: Second Session
