Mentees and mentors should create a relationship that benefits both participants. For a successful bond, Mentors and Mentees ought to establish goals, responsibilities, roles and expectations necessary to foster a solid relationship. This first meeting of pairs will create a foundation for a productive relationship through discovery of commonalities and goal setting. The amount of time spent together is not as critical as the dedication to the program from each of the participants. It is suggested that a schedule and a preferred means of contact be established at the first meeting to facilitate the establishment of a successful relationship.
It is essential that mentoring pairs:
- Maintain open communication through suggestions and feedback
- Contact each other if unable to attend a scheduled meeting
- Be committed to completing established goals by working together
- Be flexible enough to change the relationship and evolve within the relationship
- Discover new areas through mutual exploration
- Discover common ground and respect differences and confidences
- Follow up on commitments
- Share experiences (Text from CALAMENT website)
