About CAP: Changing the World

Changing the World

Contemporary design and planning involves more than visually appealing buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes. Architects, landscape architects, and urban planners must develop spaces that are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable--healthy, affordable, and enriching places for people to live, work, and play.

Ball State University's College of Architecture and Planning has become a model for promoting sustainable and socially responsible design.

Teaching, research, creative projects, and community service in the college address issues ranging from affordable housing, urban growth, economic revitalization, and transportation to historic preservation, energy efficiency, land stewardship, resource conservation, and technology.

Students and professors assist cities, towns, and neighborhoods across Indiana and the country through community design workshops and field studios. Many of these projects are organized by CAP's national award-winning Community-Based Projects program and Muncie Urban Design Studio, plus the new CAP Indianapolis Center.

CAP also demonstrates its emphasis on sustainability and community design through the following college centers and university programs:

  • Building Futures Institute
  • Land Design Institute and LandLab
  • Education for Sustainability Global Media Network
  • Muncie Community Outreach Partnership Center
  • Center for Energy Research/Education/Service
  • Clustered Minors in Environmentally Sustainable Practices
  • Greening of the Campus international conferences
  • UniverCity academic/cultural festival

CAP has forged numerous connections and partnerships with schools and professionals in countries around the world. International field study trips take Ball State participants to Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia, and international students and teachers come to the college through partnerships and exchanges.

These experiences give students and faculty a broader cultural perspective and a valuable foundation for global design practice.
