Facilities: Design Studios

Design Studios

The College of Architecture and Planning's academic programs focus on the studio method of education, providing students with hands-on design exercises almost every semester. That's why our 25 design studios are the hub of activity in the college.

From the day of entry until graduation, each undergraduate and graduate student in CAP is assigned a personal work space in a studio, accessible around the clock every day while the university is in session. The location of all departmental and faculty offices near the studios enhances student/faculty rapport and facilitates mentoring.

Each design studio is equipped with state-of-the-art tools and materials for completing drawings, models, and other hands-on assignments for design and graphics courses.

Technology
CAP's extensive technological resources are bringing studio education into the electronic age. The traditional methods of education and practice in the environmental design fields have focused on drawing boards, T-squares, pencils, markers, and other drawing equipment. Increasingly these fields are using electronic technology to facilitate both the analysis that precedes the design process and the design process itself.

In the college's studios, students are experimenting with a variety of digital design and presentation tools, including three-dimensional modeling and animation software, video filming and editing equipment, and live interactive media.

Course Work
Studio courses in each of CAP's degree programs challenge students to develop skills and a knowledge base for solving real-world problems in creative and environmentally sound ways. To learn how the studios are used in each discipline, explore the various undergraduate programs and graduate programs or view examples of student projects online.
