Admissions: Undergraduate Selection Criteria

The College of Architecture and Planning seeks to admit undergraduate students who have excelled in scholarship and who show promise of a high level of achievement in the college's programs. There are no minimum academic standards that guarantee admission. Rather, admission is based on how competitive an individual is within the applicant pool.

The majority of high school applicants admitted to CAP are in the top 20 percent of their high school classes and have composite scores of at least 1120 on the SAT or 24 on the ACT. To be competitive, transfer applicants should have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale).

CAP's admissions committee carefully reviews all submitted materials with consideration given to the following:

  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship as documented by all submitted transcripts (SAT/ACT scores of high school applicants will be considered)
  • Information from the supplemental application form that demonstrates initiative, leadership experience, and interest in the environmental design and planning disciplines
  • The quality of the essay that must accompany the student's application

A personal interview and portfolio are not required, but a portfolio is highly recommended as a way to show the CAP admissions committee your potential in pursing an education within the college. Learn more about submitting a portfolio.

CAP has no admission quotas by race, gender, state of residence, or expressed preference of major (architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning). Ball State University's equal opportunity and affirmative action policy is available online.

High School Preparation
The CAP admissions committee is interested in high school applicants completing a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. This usually includes four years of English, four years of academic math, three years of lab science, two to three years of social sciences, and speech. All three disciplines of the college rely on the understanding of the creative process. To that end, courses in the visual arts are highly desirable.

Other recommended electives include courses in keyboard and graphic skills and in computers. While experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) is a welcome skill, it is not essential. Instead, courses that provide experience in hand drawing and sketching are strongly encouraged. Foreign languages are not required but are desirable since CAP has extensive study-abroad opportunities.

Qualified high school juniors and seniors also can explore the professions of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and environmental design in a special two-week summer program at Ball State. Learn more about the CAP Summer High School Workshop.
