The Burris Laboratory School Diversity Garden has taken two years to design and install. The garden has been a K12 project with students participating in fund raising, design, plant selection and providing labor for the project. Burris teachers Jan Segedy, Christina Coelho and Ball State University professor Dr. James Kirkwood worked on the project to completion.
The Memorial Garden has been created to honor all the men and women who died in our country's wars. The flowers are red white and blue and are planted around the bench. White daisies were planted in honor of Megan Stedman, a Burris student who died of heart complications. Red flowers are Bee Balm, Dianthus and Pyrethrum. White flowers are Shasta Daisy, Cone flower and Mountain Mint.
The States' Garden has state flowers native to mid-western states. This garden is closest to the kindergarten windows west of the pathway. The flowers are those used by Native Americans and early pioneers for food and medicine. Peonies, Purple Cone flower, Yarrow, Blue Indigo and Blue Lobelia are in this garden.
The Hoosier Garden has plants native to Indiana and need little care or maintenance. They are on the east side of the path nearest grassy play area. The flowers are Butterfly Weed, Coreopsis, Sweet Black Eyed Susan, Cardinal Flower, False Dragon head and the Ox Eye Sunflower.
