Our program is competitive and limited to 16 students each year. You may apply to the program at any time with either the online or the paper application form; however, we begin evaluating applications for the summer/fall term as early as the preceding March.
We accept applications until we fill all 16 spots.
- Currently enrolled Ball State undergraduate or graduate biology students may apply directly to the Biotechnology Certificate Program.
- U.S. citizens currently not enrolled at Ball State University must first apply to the Ball State Graduate School and then to the program.
- International students currently not enrolled at Ball State University must first apply through International Programs. If interested in a departmental teaching assistantship for fall semester, you must submit your application to International Programs by December 31. Please contact International Programs for guidance through the application process.
Note: You must first be accepted into Ball State University before we accept you into the program.

- Current Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) scores for those receiving undergraduate credit or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores for those receiving graduate credit
- Original undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts
- Three recommendations on the program's form
Program Completion Options
Once accepted into our program you may:
- Take the one-year program as an undergraduate and applying the credits towards a bachelor's degree in biology.
- Take the one-year program as a post-baccalaureate, non-degree seeking student. With this option you will pay fees at the undergraduate rate.
- Take the one-year program as a post-baccalaureate, non-degree seeking student and receive graduate credit. With this option you will pay fees at the graduate rate.
- Take the one-year program as a graduate student and complete nine to twelve additional hours to earn a master degree in biology.
Note: You must submit a separate application to be considered for a graduate assistantship.
