Whale and Dolphin Watching

Whales can be easily seen from the Pat Morton Lookout on Lennox Headland. There is a walking track that leads east along the headland to one or two other prime viewing positions. Whales pass by Lennox Headland in June/July on their annual pilgrimage to warmer waters and then they pass again heading south during September/October. Dolphins can be spotted fishing along the beach about 15 metres off the shore.

Surfing

Learning to surf is a great way of experiencing the beach culture of Lennox Head first hand. For beginners, there are a couple of good surf schools in the region. Best surfing is off the point--it has been rated as one of the best right-hand point breaks anywhere on Earth. The point break is one of the longest and biggest warm water breaks in Australia.

Fishing

Anglers can wade out from the southern end of Seven Mile Beach across the reef of exposed black rock to fish or bream, mackerel, snapper and the occasional big jewfish. In the right conditions, boats can be launched from the southern end of Seven Mile Beach through a break in the reef known as "The Moat". With a boat it is possible to go outside and fish the pinnacle reef located just off the Point.

The Beach

Almost every day from October to May offers pleasant beach weather but the very best months for the beach are from December to April. Seven Mile Beach is a long unprotected beach with a small seasonally patrolled area out the front of the Surf Life Saving Club. Rips are common right along the beach. In ideal conditions with a light westerly there is a good beach break of around 2.5 metres. Surfing in Lennox is excellent, but if you are looking for a protected, waveless swimming area head towards the south end of Seven Mile Beach (near the Headland) where it is protected by a breakwater, or head further south to Ballina where there are some calm and protected beaches.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

The protected, waveless swimming area towards the south end of Seven Mile Beach, where it is protected by breakwater, is an excellent place for snorkeling at low tide. You can also take fully guided dive and snorkel trips from Byron Bay to Julian Rocks Marine Reserve where you can experience one of the top ten dive sites of Australia.
