Volunteers play an important role at the Ball State University Museum of Art, especially as greeters at the museum entrance and as hosts at events such as Friday with Friends.
University students and community members staff our volunteer docent corps, serving as museum teachers for visiting groups.
Front Desk Volunteers
The front desk volunteer program was initiated following a 2002 renovation that expanded the museum's gallery and public spaces. These energetic volunteers welcome and orient visitors to the museum. They are typically assigned during the museum's peak tour hours, in two-hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. To learn more about this program, contact Carl Schafer, Associate Director, at (765) 285-5242.
Docents/Tour Guides
The docent program allows a small number of Ball State students and community members to voluntarily give tours of the museum for groups from the community and the university. These students undergo extensive training, meeting once a week with Tania Said, Curator of Eduction, to learn art theory and effective methods of conducting an interactive tour.
