19th- and Early 20th-Century Art

Preceded by the political revolutions of America and France and ushered in by the industrial revolution, the beginning of the modern era witnessed a parade of "isms" in the art world. Neoclassicism, romanticism, realism, impressionism, and postimpressionism, along with tonalism in America, are among the movements and counter-movements that define this era.

The Ball State University Museum of Art's collection is particularly rich in works of art from this era and includes American and European paintings and sculpture by Eugene-Louis Boudin, Thomas Cole, Edgar Degas, Childe Hassam, Jean-Francois Millet, and Gilbert Stuart.
