High school juniors and seniors are invited to participate in the Department of Art's Open House and Portfolio Review on Saturday, March 1, 2008 in the Art and Journalism Building on campus. See our studios, talk to faculty and students, view student work, and learn more about career possibilities.

Your questions about our undergraduate programs in art can be easily answered at this event. Parents, art teachers, and guidance counselors are also welcome to attend. And it's free! View the schedule of events.

Did you say this was a portfolio review, too?
To be an art major at Ball State, students must submit an application for admission to the Department of Art along with a portfolio of current artwork. On this day, students can bring their actual artwork to be reviewed by our faculty as part of the criteria for admission. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Presentation of your work is important. Take pride in your artwork and how you present it. A portfolio case can be purchased at any art store to protect your work. Since many portfolios are similar in appearance, please clearly label the outside of your portfolio with your name.
  • Decide what you want to include in your portfolio. Work can come from classroom assignments, sketchbooks, workshops, precollege programs, or work done "on your own" outside the classroom. No more than 15 pieces should be brought to this event. Remember, at least three drawings from direct observation must be included as part of your portfolio.
  • You'll need to bring a laptop computer to showcase any digital artwork at this event, including digital video, computer animation, interactive art, and net-based projects. Be sure the work is in a finished format, and limit any video clips to 2-3 minutes.

Bring your applications!
To complete the admission process, students who attend this event must submit the Department of Art application and high school transcripts by the April 1 deadline to be considered for regular admission. Students who have been admitted to Ball State are encouraged to submit these materials at this event.

To be considered for scholarships, all materials must be submitted by the March 7 deadline, including both the art admission application and the scholarship application, high school transcripts, essay, resume, recommendation, and portfolio documentation in either 35mm slides or PowerPoint on a CD. Students must be admitted to Ball State to be considered for scholarships. Learn more about applying for admission.
