Southwest Field Trip
8 - 22 May

This May (May 8 -22), an exciting fieldtrip to Arizona and New Mexico is being offered by the Department of Anthropology. It will take you to five Native American reservations including the Navajo, Hopi, Havasupai, Zuni, and Acoma. The overall goal is to sensitize participants to the contemporary issues facing Native Americans in general and those of the Southwest in particular.

We will be discussing these issues face to face with tribal leaders in both formal and informal settings. Included in the trip is an eleven-mile hike into the Grand Canyon, the home of the Havasupai, and a hike into Canyon de Chelly located on the Navajo Reservation. We will witness traditional ceremonies such as Kachina dances, visit ancient ruins, and participate is a sweat ceremony with the Havasupai. We will end the trip with a home stay with an Acoma Pueblo family.

The price of this field trip is $3,088, which pays for 6 hours of tuition, a round-trip air fare, a helicopter ride out of the Grand Canyon, van rentals, your housing, your food, a field manual, some entrance fees and insurance. This is a great way to earn 6 credits and have an unforgettable learning experience.

Financial aid, including scholarships, is available to you. If you are interested in going, please call 285-5422 and have the receptionist set up a meeting time for you with Dr. Jim Coffin.
