Internships in Anthropology
Internships present excellent opportunities to gain experience in your field, oftentimes to earn money, and receive credits. The Guidelines for Internships in Anthropology outline the procedures for obtaining the necessary approval for your proposed internship. You and your prospective employer, or sponsor, are responsible for making all appropriate arrangements pertaining to your internship, including location, duration, supervision, evaluation criteria, etc.

The Archaeological Institute of America online Guide to Fieldwork Opportunities allows you to search for volunteer, field school, and staff positions at sites around the world.

American Museum of Natural History Anthropology Internship Program
This program offers internships for undergraduate and graduate students to work on projects relating to the collections or to the ongoing research interests of the curatorial staff in the museum or in the field.

AmericaView Summer Intern Program
The AmericaView Summer intern program, conducted in collaboration with USGS Survey Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) and South Dakota State University, is designed to help graduate and advanced undergraduate students learn how to apply satellite remote sensing imagery and related geospatial technologies to applied research.  Details may be obtained from the AmericaView website or from americaview.usgs.gov.  Application deadline is 1 March.

AmeriCorps National Service Program
A public organization designed to meet local needs through a wide array of service opportunities, including projects in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other critical areas.

Amerind Foundation Program
A private, nonprofit anthropological and archaeological museum and research center in southeastern Arizona dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Native American cultures and their histories. Paid internships are sometimes available.

Carter Center
A nonprofit, nonpartisan public-policy institute in Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 1982 by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. The center is dedicated to fighting disease, hunger, poverty, conflict, and oppression worldwide through collaborative initiatives in the areas of democratization and development, global health, and urban revitalization.

Center for American Archeology
The Center for America Archeology in Kampsville, Illinois, usually offers two "Women in Archeology" internships each summer.  These are open to women juniors, seniors, and graduate students aged 21 and over with a valid driver's licens and experience in archaeology.  A stipend is provided for room & board.  For further information, check "Opportunities" on their web site.  Applications are due in February.

Dayton Society of Natural History
Internships at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery are designed to provide students with practical experience in a science and natural history museum.  Interns may work in a variety of settings and learn about the overall structure and daily operations of the Museum, earning academic credit and gaining hands-on experience along the way.  They also offer summer positions for college and graduate students interested in Midwestern prehistory.  Emphasis for these is on the excavation of Fort Ancient culture site in Dayton, Ohio, dating to approximately A.D. 1200.

The Field Museum in Chicago offers undergraduate internships and graduate fellowships in support of research on their collections.

Global Volunteers
A private, nonprofit corporation that sponsors volunteer participation in international human and economic development projects in the form of "service learning" travel programs.

Historical Archaeology Internships at Mount Vernon  
A 10-week program for advanced undergraduate and graduate students with field experience and a four-month program for recent graduates seeking additional fieldwork in historical archaeology and interpretation.

Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology Internships
Unpaid internships are offered throughout the year for undergraduates and recent graduates.  Interns have the opportunity to gain practical experience and exposure to work in the State Archaeologist's office including, for example, work with archaeological site forms and other records, archaeological data entry, mapping, work with collections (cleaning, cataloguing, etc.), limited fieldworkd, and assisting with Indiana Archaeology Month planning and/or activities.  To apply, please contact Dr. Rick Jones, Indiana State Archaeologist, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, 402 W. Indiana State Government
From this page, search of "internships."  These internships provide students with the opportunity to work within Indiana state agencies and meet with a variety of elected officials, agency directors, and others.  For example, openings are sometimes available within the Indiana Department of Transportation for students with majors in anthropology, archaeology, architecture, geography, historic preservation, history, museum studies, and the like.  These IDOT internships pay $11.12 per hour for a 37.5-hour workweek.  The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship Program website is only active during the application period.

Media Education Foundation
MEF offers internships for undergraduate and graduate students each term, including the summer.  Interns at MEF will gain experience in media education, production, and activism.  Since MEF is both a production and distribution organization, interns will gain experience in both the production and operations departments.  The internships carry credit but no stipend.  Women and people of color are strongly urged to apply.

Ten-week summer Internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students in the Archaeology and Collections Programs of the NCPTT, located at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.  Applications are due by 15 March.

South Dakota Summer Internships
The state of South Dakota offers summer historic preservation internships.  These involve carrying out surveys, preparing National Register of Historic Places nominations, etc.  The salary is $8.50- $9.45, depending on qualifications.
