Graduate Assistantships in Anthropology
Each academic year, the Department of Anthropology offers a number of graduate assistantships. In addition to the great education and experience associated with these opportunities, stipends total approximately $8,800 per year and include a remission of tuition during the academic year and the following summer. Assistantships are typically renewed for a second year.

Applicants should submit all program application materials, an assistantship application (PDF), and a letter of interest by February 15 in order to be considered for an assistantship.

In addition to lab and teaching assistantships, grant-supported research assistantships in archaeology are available for one or two students after their first year. Applicants should contact the Archaeological Research Management Service (ARMS) by phone at (765) 285-5328 or by e-mail for more information.

Because only a limited number of assistantships are available in the department, anthropology majors are encouraged to seek assistantships offered in other university offices and departments. Upon the applicant's request, the Department of Anthropology will forward copies of application materials (such as recommendation letters, transcripts, etc.) to other areas for assistantship consideration.

A few university graduate fellowships are offered through the Graduate School each year. They pay a higher stipend and have no service obligation beyond a commitment to scholarship. To be eligible for consideration, you must have a minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.6 (on 4.0 scale) and scores on the GRE general test in the 85th percentile or above. Applicants must complete their application to the department by February 15 to be eligible. Assistantship applicants who meet the qualifications for consideration of a university fellowship will be recommended automatically.
