President's Message

These are exciting, challenging, and complex times in higher education, but the rewards achieved through planning, patience, and persistence far outweigh the difficulties.

At Ball State University, questions about the future of the institution and about how each academic discipline can best respond to societal changes have resulted in innovative solutions that benefit not only our campus, local, and state communities, but also those well beyond the state line who seek Ball State's expertise and resources.

As Ball State's reputation grows, its stories of achievement become ever more compelling. The 2003 President's Report presents part of the institutional story, but I would also like to share two other publications that highlight some of the entities and individuals whose ideas, energy, and endeavors make this a dynamic and successful institution.

Last year was a record-breaking year for private gifts to Ball State, with the university receiving its two largest-ever estate bequests. The Ball State University Foundation is undergoing an intensive self-study, designed to clarify its mission, strengthen its investment and business structure, and reaffirm its partnership with the university. As its annual report shows, the foundation should emerge from this strategic planning better positioned to ensure that investments in the university provide benefits for generations to come.

Ball State also attracted a record amount in research funding. The latest edition of BeneFacta explores the ways in which Ball State faculty, staff, and students are embracing technology -- an area in which our expertise has led to partnerships with national and international companies that consider Ball State a best practices institution.

As these publications illustrate, the university is breaking down barriers and helping solve problems from Muncie to Macau, and fulfilling its commitment to improve communities everywhere through academic engagement. As I prepare to leave the university to undertake an exciting venture in providing quality assurance for global online education, I do so with the confidence that Ball State is well on its way to becoming a national leader in higher education in the 21st century.

Very truly yours,
