Alumni Spotlight - Joseph (J.R.) Jamison, '01MA03 (12/1/2005)
J.R. Jamison earned a bachelor's degree in geography in 2001 and a master's degree in student affairs administration in higher education in 2003 from Ball State University. Upon graduating, J.R. worked at Ball State as the Program Advisor for the Office of Leadership and Service Learning. While in this role he developed the Alternative Breaks program that connects students to community service and civic engagement opportunities in communities across the United States. This program has become nationally recognized appearing in several newspapers across the United States and the CBS Evening News has contacted J.R. about possibly doing a story on the program in the future. J.R. is very proud of this program which began as an idea between Danielle Frazier, the current student member on the Ball State Board of Trustees, and himself.
J.R. is currently the Director of Constituent Development with Indiana Campus Compact housed at IUPUI. Indiana Campus Compact is a consortium of 32 colleges (Ball State University included) seeking to cultivate students in a lifelong commitment to community service and strengthen the positive role institutions of higher education play in their local communities. Among other duties, J.R. serves as an advocate in promoting the value of faculty and student programming with the state legislature and national policy makers as well as serving on several national and statewide committees and boards.
While a student at Ball State, J.R. was a member of Student Voluntary Services, LBGSA and then Spectrum, Far East Asia Study Abroad Tour, and Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He continues his service to the community as a member of the Muncie Jaycee's and Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity Delta Xi Chapter.
J.R. still resides in Muncie and has the opportunity to visit the Ball State campus regularly. When asked about his feelings toward Ball State, he says, "I absolutely love BSU! Ball State provided me with so many opportunities and connections that I will never forget."
