Alumni Council Report

Sue read the report from Emily Kress from the June 15, 2002 Alumni Council meeting:

In spite of economic conditions last fall, the Ball State University Foundation portfolio increased from $90 million to $93 million between November 2001 and January 2002.

The Lilly Endowment will grant $150,000 seed money for fundraising efforts to raise $3.5 million over the next 18 months which they will match dollar for dollar. Of the amount, $3 million is targeted to come from alumni giving.

Tom DeWeese was recommended by the Council as the nominee for another 4-year term on the University Board of Trustees. Tom and Hollis Hughes, the other Council representative Trustee reported that enrollment was good and tuition had been increased. Ball State is still less than Purdue and IU. In-state tuition for one year is $4,320.

Various award committees had met and results were reported. The Benny Awards will go to Don Rush, Tony Schneider, Deb Schmucker and Sally Tinkel, all retired from the Council, community recipient Paul Parkison, and BSU employee, Coach Bill Lynch. The G.O.L.D awards will go to Erika Cheney, Yong Colen, Doug Fant, Ellen Owens-Summo, Stacy Paetz, Krishna Thomas and Ryan Weihler.

Forty-seven Legacy scholarships of $1,600 will be awarded for this academic year. This is a one-time scholarship available to children and grandchildren of BSU alumni.
