BUSINESS

2003 Board Slate—Charlotte Shepperd reported that there are three, two-year positions open:  President, Vice President, and Alumni Council Representative.  Based on those willing to serve, the following slate was proposed:  Sarah Shrode, president; Juli Metzger, vice president; and Jim Grim, Alumni Council representative.  A motion was made to approve the 2003 slate, seconded and approved by voice vote.  Deborah Robinson agreed to a new term ending December 31, 2006.  Shepperd will contact Susan Akers to see if she wants to serve a new term.  Shepperd reported that there are two or three at-large positions open, depending on Akers response.  Shepperd has made an effort to contact prospective members Amy Leang, Angela Rapp, and Layne Cameron.  Celeste Williams is not in the alumni database, so verification as a BSU graduate will be researched.  Shepperd will follow up on the contacts.  Other names submitted were Stephanie Berry, Cindy Graham, and Heather Yost.

Regional Alumni Events—Grim reported that there were 50 journalism alumni at the Indianapolis Art Walk, Thursday, September 5 and that it was a success.

Dinner in conjunction with Public Relations Conference, Friday, October 4, 2002—Marilyn Weaver reported that 2,500 brochures were mailed and that there is one dinner reservation to-date.  The reservation deadline is Sunday, September 15.

Student Media Alumni Reunion—June 21, 2003 is the date that has been selected for the reunion, and the Alumni Center has been reserved for the event.  Places of lodging will need to be arranged.  Grim is working on a letter to mail to all journalism alumni.  The committee will expand to incorporate former editors to serve as advisors and to also contact their former co-workers of their respective publication.  David Knott will provide a list of alumni who participated in the previous Daily News reunion.  There was discussion of ideas including having a DJ or journalism alumni to form a band; having a theme and making the event a cookout or social gathering; incorporating tours; and making a booklet of editors bios.

Chicago Event—Weaver reported that she contacted Shawn Malayter and Mike Smith as liaisons for the event for their suggestions.  Some ideas are a Chicago architectural cruise tour; an event incorporating a sports activity and implementing the Chicago Tribune.  The activity might include a reception and dinner and be hosted where the board would stay.  Weaver said that there are approximately 400 journalism alumni in the Chicago area.  Following discussion, Saturday, August 9, 2003 was suggested for the activity.  Weaver will contact Malayter to proceed and report at the next board meeting.

Journalism Alumni Awards Program—Shepperd reported that she is working to get a list to review for prospective alumni award nominations.  Diane Williams reported that there are currently 46 overall active award nominees—12 Hall of Fame, 17 Outstanding Journalism Alumnus Award, and 17 Outstanding Young Journalism Alumni Award.  There was discussion regarding the number of recipients selected each year for each award.  Currently selection recommendations are two or three for Hall of Fame, one for Alumni, and one for Young Alumnus.  Following discussion, Lesley Stedman made a motion that the nominating committee recommend up to three for the Alumni and Young Alumni awards.  David Knott seconded the motion and it was passed by voice vote.  The following board members will serve as the Awards Committee:  Brian Hayes, Juli Metzger, Deborah Robinson, Charlotte Shepperd, Sarah Shrode, Lesley Stedman, Dan Waechter, Marilyn Weaver, and Diane Williams. The Committee will meet Thursday, January 23 at 4:00 p.m. in the Alumni Center board room.

A call for nominations is published in Phoenix and also on the Web.  It was reported that there are currently 1,233 journalism alumni e-mail addresses and that a PUSH e-mail can be sent for nominations.

DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Marilyn Weaver reported that there are three new faculty members and two professional staff members on board this fall.  The Jnews provides a full listing.  The faculty are former MSNBC multimedia producer Larry Dailey, who will teach Web design and information design courses; newswriting and information gathering instructor Lori Demo; and advertising instructor Mike Hanley.  Professional staff includes Angelita Abrams Rains, as convergence workshop manager; and Jerry Pierce, integrated media lab administrator.

Enrollment figures are up about six percent from last year.  Though not final numbers, there are nearly 1,100 majors and minors in the program this year.

As a result of the iComm grant, there is a new news program that will be produced daily.  It is a converged project involving television, the Daily News, and the Internet.  Five full-time staff members are working on the effort, which will air on cable.  Funded by the grant for two years, it will need to be self-sustaining to continue in the future.  There will be paid internships as part of the program.

The Secondary Education Services program is expanding this year.  The department will host technology workshops and the ASNE Advisor institute again.

The department is involved with UniverCity on campus.  Journalism alumnus Fred Blevens is among those who will make presentations during the week.  Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer prizewinner; Bryan Erickson, art director for Time magazine; and Robert Sims, assistant secretary of defense, are scheduled as Professionals-in-Residence for the coming year.  The department continues to review other prospective guests.

The department will host an open house November 2 in the AJ Building in conjunction with Family Weekend.

ALUMNI COUNCIL UPDATE

The Council is scheduled to meet Saturday, September 14.  Amy Ahlersmeyer will serve at her final Council meeting as the journalism representative.

Homecoming is set for Saturday, October 19 and Shepperd encouraged the board to be involved.

The Association staff is losing some members.  Russ Lawrence, Andrea Deer, and Angela Parker all are leaving to pursue other goals.  Denise Greer, a Ball State journalism grad, is joining the Communications staff and the other vacancies are posted.

Shepperd also noted that former Journalism Alumni Association member Phil Schermerhorn died September 4.  Phil had also served on the Alumni Council and had been a valued member of the Communications Advisory Board for the Alumnus magazine.
