FCS Meeting Minutes, November 7, 2002
Members Present: Corine Carr, Suzie Huber, Bonnie Johnston, Jackie Johnston, Jama Kirby Montgomery, Marla Kurtz, Mike Landram, Jeanine LeMaster, Alice Spangler, Sharon Stephen, Sue Taylor, Diane Williams, and Sandra Wimmer.

President Jackie Johnston called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m.

Jackie asked for corrections or additions to the minutes of the June 10, 2002 meeting.  There was discussion regarding correction to the June 10, 2002 amendments to the By-Laws of the Constitution, Article IV, Section 1.  A suggested revision was distributed:

  • Article IV, Section 1—A.  (add “account #3901” at the end

  • Article IV, Section 1—B.  (add “and in consultation with the FCS Alumni Society Board President,”) 

Following discussion, Suzie Huber made a motion to revise the By-Laws as follows:

  • Article IV, Section 1—Alleviate A.—B. becomes A.—C. becomes B.

Corine Carr seconded the motion and the By-Laws revision was approved by voice vote.

Jama Kirby Montgomery made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected, Bonnie Johnston seconded the motion, and the minutes were approved by voice vote.

DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Alice Spangler distributed a summary.  She reported that the new Family & Child option had a Fall 2002 enrollment of 34 and has increased to 46 students.  The graduate program remains at 50 students.  The growth of the programs will affect an increase of attendance of FCS Career Mentoring Day.

The Freshman Welcome Reception, Faculty Picnic, and Family Weekend had excellent attendance and were very successful.

The department hosted a reception Homecoming Day and 15-20 attended.  It was noted that parking is a problem that needs to be resolved for Homecoming Day.

Corine Carr reported on the Phi Upsilon Omicron Conclave, which was held September 14-24, 2002.  The Conclave events included an FCS presentation in conjunction with UniverCity, activities at the Minnetrista Cultural Center and Horizon Center, as well as a dinner, tour, and luncheon.  There was also a 50-Year members reception.  Each member was presented with an honor cord, flowers, and a certificate.  FCS Alumni board members and faculty assisted with this activity and appreciation was expressed to the board for underwriting the reception.

An electronic Web project called WELLcomeHome has been initiated. It is a home-modification resource for serving the needs of older Americans.  An information card was mailed to FCS alumni and distributed to the board.   The Web site is available at: http://www.bsu.edu/wellcomehome/

Six leather portfolios have been purchased as gifts to recipients of the FCS Outstanding Senior Award.  The portfolios are in storage at the Alumni Association.

Marla Kurtz reported that the Fall 2002 issue of the Communique newsletter was mailed in October. 

Spangler reported that the FCS History Committee has gathered much data and ideas are being discussed.  One idea is a timeline for display and use on the Web site.  An illustration of the Journalism timeline was distributed.  An estimated cost of $1,500 for this type of display has been quoted from MP Records Communications in Indianapolis.  Funding would need to be provided.  Jama requested the board to share memories to be used as part of a history project and to submit to her via e-mail at:  jmontgomery1310@al.com and to use “Ball State Memories” as the subject line.

ALUMNI COUNCIL REPORT

Jackie reported that following the September 14, 2002 Council meeting Alumni Legacy Scholarship recipients were honored at a luncheon.  There were 47 scholarship recipients, each receiving a stipend of $1,600. 

There is a proposed increase of $1,000 for freshmen tuition.  The increase will enable the university to maintain programs that might not be possible without the added revenue. 

Alumni Association award recipients were selected and honored at the Alumni Association Awards Dinner on October 18, 2002.  There were three recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award, six recipients of the Benny Award, and seven recipients of the G.O.L.D. Award, including FCS graduate Ellen Owen-Summo.

The Alumni Association has approved a new alumni society for football lettermen.  The Cardinal Football Alliance will become active effective January 1, 2003.

University senior staff positions have been named as follows:  Beverley Pitts, Provost; Cyrus Reed, Assistant Provost;  Robert Kvam, Dean, College of Fine Arts; Nancy Kingsbury, Dean, College of Applied Sciences and Technology; and Lawrence “Bubba” Cunningham, Director of Athletics.

The next Alumni Council meeting is February 8, 2003.

OLD BUSINESS

E-Mentoring Program—Efforts continue to solicit interest and participation.

NEW BUSINESS

FCS Alumni Awards Event and Symposium Proposal—It was suggested to combine the existing awards program with a department Symposium program, Thursday, April 3, 2003.  A presentation will be given by Penny Ralston, a former FCS Alumni Award and BSUAA Black Alumni Award recipient.  A possible schedule would be 2:00-4:00 p.m., faculty presentation; 4:00-5:00 p.m., Penny Ralston presentation; 5:00-6:00 p.m., reception; 6:15 p.m., dinner and awards presentations.  There would be a cost for dinner reservations.  It was agreed that this change may enhance both areas by involving a larger audience of faculty, alumni, and students.  Corine Carr made a motion to work with the FCS department to sponsor the Symposium/alumni awards program and invite appropriate constituents.  Sharon Stephen seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.  Corine Carr, Sharon Stephen, and Sandra Wimmer agreed to serve as the Awards Planning Committee.

FCS Awards—A list of suggested changes/additions of awards was distributed for consideration:

  • Change Award of Merit to Young Professional Award of Merit.  After discussion Suzie Huber made a motion to change the title of the award to Emerging Professional Award of Merit.  Jama Kirby Montgomery seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.

  • Create new awards:  Faculty Award, Hall of Fame, and Friend of BSU FCS Award.  Following discussion Corine Carr made a motion to accept the concept of new awards and that a committee be appointed to prepare the awards criteria, respectively, for the board’s approval, and to present the new awards in 2005.  Suzie Huber, Jackie Johnston, Alice Spangler, Sue Taylor, and Linda Wallace will serve at the Awards Selection Committee.

2003 FCS Alumni Board slate—The following were nominated as officers:  Linda Wallace, President; Suzie Huber, Vice President; and Pat Barnes, Secretary.  Jama Kirby Montgomery made a motion to elect the officers, as nominated, respectively.  Sandra Wimmer seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.  Jackie Johnston will serve as Past President and Alumni Council Representative.

  • Two new members were confirmed:  Holly Stuckey, ’00, January 1, 2003-December 31, 2004; and Amy Bradburn, ’97, January 1, 2003-December 31, 2005.  Suzie Huber made a motion to approve the new members and invite them to accept new two- and three-year terms, accordingly.  Jeanine LeMaster seconded the motion and it was passed by voice vote.  These new members represent two newer academic programs in the department.

A financial report was distributed for BSU Foundation Account #3905, Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Society Fund.  Sue Taylor reported an October 14, 2002 balance of $377.37.  There are three expenditures in process—Phi Upsilon Omicron Conclave reception, plaques presented at FCS Career Mentoring Day,  and reimbursement to Jackie Johnston for purchase of portfolios for FCS Outstanding Senior Award recipients.

A reminder was made that active membership of the FCS Alumni Society and BSU Alumni Association requires an annual contribution to the BSU Foundation on or before December 31.  The contribution may be designated to any account, or be undesignated.

The next board meeting will be Monday, February 3, 2003, 6:00 p.m., Alumni Center Board Room.  Alice will arrange for a faculty member to make a presentational t the meeting.
