Following a motion by Jackie Johnston to approve the October 25, 2007 meeting minutes, and a second by Linda Wallace, and the minutes were unanimously approved as written by voice vote.
ALUMNI COUNCIL UPDATE
Jackie reported on the Alumni Council, which met Friday, February 1 and Saturday, February 2. The Council took a tour of the David Letterman building and had dinner at the Fine Arts Building. On Saturday, the Council met within various committees in the Alumni Center. This year Jackie will serve on the nomination committee, services committee and the alumni involvement/new initiatives committee. The latter committee has developed a list of new ideas and budgets for new initiatives.
A portion of the meeting was spent discussing the budget which included scholarships funds. The Alumni Legacy Scholarship received 138 applications. The committee has $100,000 to award and will meet February 25 to review applications and make selections.
Ed Shipley introduced Steve Fulton from the BSUAA, who gave a presentation on new media initiatives undertaken by the Alumni Association. The Association has a new web design and currently has more than 120 pages on the web site. The site is undergoing a complete re-launch to reflect the University's updated format. He indicated that new services available to engage young alumni are: blogging, Face Book, My Space, You Tube and Second Life.
Jackie reminded board members of ways to help support the Alumni Association. Some services include the Alumni Registry, Affinity License Plate and the Affinity Credit Card.
The Alumni Council sent a congratulatory letter to Nicole Rash, runner-up in the Miss America Contest and a FCS student.
The next Alumni Council meeting will be held April 25 & 26.
DEPARTMENT UPDATE
● Alice Spangler reported a committee is in the process of interviewing and selecting a new dean for the college. Three candidates will be on campus for interviews.
● There has been a change in the curriculum with a split in the Family and Child program to Family Studies option and Child Development option. The Child Life Specialist option will continue.
● Dietetic internship applications have had a huge surge this year with 47 applications turned in so far. Dietetics is moving in the direction of a required masters degree.
● Nicole Rash, a fashion merchandising student, was first runner-up in the Miss America Contest. Alumni Joy and Jim Robbins had served as her image consultants.
● Residential Property Management had its Face-to-Face program today in the Alumni Center. Approximately 25 companies participated by interviewing several RPM students, who also gave presentations.
● Two interior design students received honorable mention during the Design Interaction Day, a statewide event held in Indianapolis.
● Three faculty received Indiana Campus Compact grants for service learning. Sue Whitaker and Alice Spangler received a grant to develop immersive experiences in the community for the capstone professional development course taken by all students in the department. Becky Adams received funds to support students in her public policy class through attending the Indiana Legislature last week.
FCS E-NEWSLETTER UPDATE
Marla Kurtz reported that the newsletter is currently online to view. The next step includes the BSUAA sending an announcement via e-mail to all FCS e-mail addresses. Postcards will go out to all addresses which do not have an email registered with the goal being to get responses from alumni. The e-mail and postcard would be a link/message announcing the newsletter. The "Keep in Touch" as well as the awards link will stay the same.
NEW MEMBERS
Nominations for two openings on the board were discussed and voted on. Sue will send congratulatory letters to Nicole Rongo '03 and Laura (Dragoo) Mickler '06.
2008 ALUMNI AWARDS EVENT
The Selection Committee meeting was help on February 29. It was decided that a brunch would be served that day. Julie Johnson will contact Bill Kimes for a couple menu options. Theme and color scheme still need to be decided. The awards are presented every other year. Jackie Johnston suggested the event be held every year to align with other constituent groups and that the committee determine table décor and menu.
BOARD AND NEW INITIATIVES
Discussion was held on how to reach out to new people and engage the younger alumni. Tim Hill suggested a Wine tasting event. Other suggestions included: bowling, the zoo, family events. March Madness, Wine/cheese tasting with tickets to the FCS Fashion Show or could replace the wine and cheese with pizza and beer. More discussion will take place at the next meeting.
