Board of Directors Meeting
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Alumni Center Board Room Board Members Present: Susan Alvis, Mary Buckley, Phyllis Chapin, Pam Cole, Kathy Hutson, Doreen Johnson, Julie Johnson, Ernie Krug, Connie McIntosh, Jan Noel, Brandy Renz, Linda Siktberg, and Ruth Ann Tolle.
President Mary Buckley called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. and asked for any corrections or additions to the minutes of the December 13, 2008 Nursing Alumni Society board of directors meeting. Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the minutes as presented and they were approved by voice vote.
Review of December Pinning Ceremony – Discussion was held on the length of the slide show presentation being too long. A suggestion was made on limiting the length of the show or starting it ahead of time. A motion was made to limit the slide show to no more than 30 minutes.
Outstanding Alumni Committee Report – Connie McIntosh reported there were seven nominations. Sue C. Price was selected based on her service. She has a long history in the OB field, as well as participating in mission trips with her church. A motion was made by Doreen Johnson and seconded by Mary Buckley and was approved by voice vote. Connie and Mary will notify Sue of her award.
Scholarship Committee Report – Jan Noel reported there were 13 applications received, however, two individuals had not completed a semester of nursing classes. A motion was made by Jan to accept 11 of the 13 applicants. Susan Alvis seconded, and the motion was carried. The scholarships, in the amount of $12,705, will be allocated to the 11 applicants in amounts as recommended by the committee. Connie and David McIntosh set up a new scholarship, so additional money will also be available.
Nursing Alumni Banquet – Mary advised the board that the banquet committee suggested changes for the banquet, a motion was made and carried for the following: a few moments of silence in place of the prayer, roll call the same as last year, pins and flowers to be distributed at registration, to go from long tables to round tables this year. The date is set for Saturday, April 26, 2008 with the menu chosen as chilled potato soup with fried onions orange rolls with butter grilled petite strip steak served atop parmesan risotto, sauteed vegetable medley and chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert. Julie Johnson will notify Bill Kimes of the menu choice and the change in table set-up. Also the board agreed to let the undergraduate classes sell clothing items the day of the banquet.
Children's Museum Report – Kathy Hutson reported there is still a need for a preceptor for this Saturday, February 23. The next date will be Sunday, March 29, from 1-5 pm. A motion was made and carried that an announcement for the need of preceptors be put in The Link and also the Cardinals Nest newsletter. Kathy will submit information to Ernie and Linda Siktberg to include in written communication.
The Link/Spring Newsletter – Linda Siktberg reported that the newsletter is still in the process of being produced. Ernie will submit a count to Linda by Friday, February 22 and then make a request for electronic mailing labels.
May Pinning Ceremony – The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2008 at 7 pm. There will be 57 students, including one student who asked to wear a military uniform and will be commissioned during the ceremony. Emens has been scheduled. The Alumni Association will sponsor the reception. Pam Cole will order the flowers. Jan Noel will assist with scissor and flower distribution. Phyllis Chapin will arrange for classes to pass out programs. Jan and Ruth Ann Tolle will meet with the May and July classes, tentatively, March 17. Mary and Jan will pass out scissors and flowers in July. Practice is scheduled for May 1 at 2 p.m. and July 17 at 2 p.m. Kathy will emcee the July ceremony. The deadlines to get the programs to Julie are April 4 and June 20.
Department Update – Linda reported on the progress of the DNP with hopes it will be on the March 14 agenda. Three students from the University of Worcester were here for six weeks. Two were in Pediatrics at Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, and one was in adult focus and worked in the simulation lab at the SON. They had a good experience and hope to improve their nursing program in the UK but within the parameters of their regulations. BSU has 4-5 Pediatric students going to Worcester the Summer and Fall semester of 2008. The SON had 100 students apply to the nursing program. The plan is to have 80+ in the fall and 20 in the summer.
Alumni Council/Alumni Association – Kathy Hutson attended the last Alumni Council meeting conducted February 2, at the Alumni Center. Steve Fulton of the Alumni Association gave a presentation regarding various technology available that is used to reach alumni. Some of the programs available are LinkedIN, Facebook, Myspace and SecondLife, just to name a few. Also discussed during the Council meeting were award recipients and the various services that BSUAA offers.
