The Alumni Council President Charles Green reported that there will be a change in the Legacy Scholarship application deadline. To better use the scholarship for recruiting students, the deadline has been changed from the first Friday in April to the first Friday in February.
The council accepted a draft resolution to establish Alumni Association geographic area scholarships, defined as those areas that have an alumni ambassador or alumni chapter. Still to be determined are how many scholarships will be given. That number will be determined by how many chapters participate. They will probably be awarded in the spring.
The Foundation is slightly above the national average on its investments with a 17% return since the first of the year. Assets are $237 million as of June 30, 2007. Contributions, since January 1, 2007, exceeds $24 million.
The nominating committee offered a slate of officers for the Alumni Council: Tom Farris, president elect, Jo Ann Johnston, vice-president.
A task force has been put in place to evaluate the Ball State Alumnus magazine. They want to analyze the size, cost, amount of color and distribution of the magazine.
Miller College of Business Report
Interim dean Davis gave an update on the Student Advisory Board. Three of its members were taken to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner where alumnus Neil Ellerbrook was given its business leader of the year award. Davis has been promoting to the Student Advisory Board a sense of connectivity between their members and the MCOB Alumni Board. The Student Advisory Board consists of 24 members represented from various business majors. The purpose of the Student Advisory Board is of a two-way conversation to share experiences. Walbridge suggested hosting an annual joint meeting between the two groups.
Davis mentioned that the week of November 5th was national Entrepreneurship Week. Venture-Idol took place in Indianapolis where one Ball State student took third place out of 47 entries. The winner of the contest had the idea of a new technique for coating steel. The Ball State team project was pooyou.com. It is based on social networking that allows an individual to order poo to be delivered to someone. Ball State senior entrepreneurship major Matt Bare, CEO of pooyou.com, wants it to be a market/research tool for companies to get complaint data about their competitors.
According to Davis, the Entrepreneurship Center won a pedagogy award for its ground floor project which focuses as a way of helping students in certain communities develop programs in those communities.
Montagno spoke of a design for the Miller Scholars Program that was submitted to the University. The design includes 10 four-year full tuition awards given to top-notch students. The awards would also include a study abroad trip and a laptop. The idea is to get a pool of 40-50 applicants each year and connect with all of them in some capacity. If approved, the design will go into effect next fall.
Davis commented on the Dean's Search Committee, who met November 12, 2007. The committee is in the process of reviewing candidates in which they did not look at during their last meeting. Davis foresees a potential spring hire and a hopeful start date of July 1, 2008.
In the development area, Chris Lehnertz is now the development officer for the Miller College of Business according to Davis. The effort in development is getting geared up for the capital campaign. However, Davis mentioned the effort to ensure that the college does not loose contact with its alumni and to continue to improve its outreach.
Montagno spoke of the new director of Bureau of Business Research, Mike Hicks, who has become much more engaged in just three months since he started his tenure at Ball State. He will be invited to come to the next board meeting to discuss his area of expertise.
Welcome New Members
Heeter asked the current members of the board to introduce themselves, followed by the new members.
Dialogue Days
Dialogue Days will take place Tuesday and Wednesday March 4-5, 2008. Estep announced that over 100 alumni participated in last year's event. Ittenbach's recruitment was a contributor to the success in previous years. Estep asked the board for their help in identifying potential speakers for this year's Dialogue Days. The goal of Dialogue Days is to have every student hear at least one speaker. It is a two-way benefit between the presenters and the students.
New Officers
Heeter stated Walbridge is slated to start as the Board's President next meeting, while Earley will begin his tenure as Vice President. Ittenbach was also voted in as the new Alumni Council Representative, effective immediately.
Alumni Awards Dinner
The 2007 MCOB Alumni Awards Dinner was held on Friday, October 5, 2007 at the Alumni Center. Estep passed out a comparison of figures and mentioned that the proceeds go back to the students for the Professionalism Certificate and Dialogue Days. The profit from the Awards Dinner was $14,699.52, which is the largest profit ever received from the event. The goal for next year, according to Estep, is to get more people to participate. Also, the board needs to be thinking about new sponsors. Nominees for next year's Awards Dinner will be a priority for the near future.
After a review of last year's dinner, it was suggested that a goal should be to meet or beat the profit gained this year. Also, targeting sponsors between March and May could be of benefit. Another suggestion was targeting other advisory boards within the college to sponsor a table. The other advisory boards associated with the Miller College of Business are:
Boards
MCOB Alumni
Accounting Advisory Council
Entrepreneurship Ad Board
Executive Advisory Board
Finance Advisory Board
Human Resource Advisory Board
Insurance & Risk Management Advisory Board
Information Systems Advisory Board
Marjetubg Ad Board
MBA Ad Board
H.H. Gregg Center for Prof. Selling Advisory Board
Young Alumni Accounting Advisory Board
Estep mentioned the possibility of changing the way the award winners are introduced. It has been the same format each year. Westfall, the chair of the Awards Dinner, would like to call the recipients individually to see what they want to share for their biographies.
Carl Davis suggested getting University Communications involved in a public relations campaign to promote the event. Additionally, buying an ad in the Indianapolis Business Journal to announce the award recipients may be of benefit, according to Walbridge.
The date for next year's Awards Dinner will be set soon.
Palomba Fund Usage
Ittenbach made contact with Ed Shipley, Executive Director of the Alumni Association, to ask him to meet to discuss the use of the Palomba Fund. Ittenbach does not have a date set to meet with Shipley as of yet, but is planning on speaking to him soon. The written document of the Palomba Fund was read to the board. The board has suggested using some of the money to help business students attend competitions in their major/area. A list of potential competitions will be developed and discussed at the next meeting. Additionally, a plaque may be hung in the business building named in honor of former Dean Palomba. Johnson will work with Davis and Montagno to establish some ideas on kinds of plaques and verbiage to display on the plaque.
Planning for 2007-08
Walbridge asked the board to be thinking about where it wants to go next, where the holes are in the college, and what role the board can play.
Next Meeting Date and Location
The next proposed meeting date is Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. There is a possibility of having the board meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. in a conference room in Conseco, a social/networking event for MCOB alumni from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the Pacers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game at 7 p.m. All of these details are yet to be confirmed and will be announced at a later date.
