Tuesday, June 23, 2007 Pittenger Student Center, Founders
Room Minutes
Present: Tom Gayda, Jim Grim, Brian Hayes, Julie Johnson, Sarah Maisto, Deb Robinson, Jennifer Ross, Charlotte Shepperd, Sarah Swan, Marilyn Weaver
The meeting was designed to allow all sub-committees to meet. Summaries of committee work follows.
Mentoring—Deb Robinson summarized.
Consider three elements:
• One-on- Mentoring
• A Career Day
• Campus speakers
Robinson said the Career Day will take a good deal of coordination. We might be able to tie in to the campus speakers and Professional-in-Residence programs already in place.
One-on-one mentoring might be possible through the Professional Development Class (269). It would enable connecting mentors with students.
The committee should meet with Sheryl Swingley to consider guidelines on "how to mentor".
Committee: Jennifer Ross, Pam Records, Deb Robinson, Charlotte Shepperd
Professional Development—Jim Grim and Sarah Swan reporting.
• Testimonials
• Showcase alumni
• Speakers Bureau
Hayes said several biographies have been received from the board. We would like to post those bios by early September.
Perhaps showcase alumni through highlighting two or three at a time. Obtain some work they've produced. We might also put info on the Web site.
A suggestion was made to, perhaps, begin the process with our award recipients as a pool.
Regarding a Speakers Bureau, a suggestion was made to, perhaps, develop a roster of interested participants, to be available to instructors. We will need to define guidelines for information we will need from prospective speakers, including what topics they might talk about.
Another thought is to establish a space on the Web site for alumni to write their memories of their time at Ball State. It might be patterned similarly to "Memories of Louis."
Awards—Sarah Maisto reporting
• Push e-mail to alumni database
• Personal contact from board members
• Letter to all former recipients
We discussed soliciting nominations from our alumni database via a push e-mail. The message should be sent in the fall.
Another avenue to request nominations is through a letter to all former recipients.
Weaver should do the letter to former recipients.
In order to get current information from nominees, the board needs to make personal contact with them. Juli Metzger is working on a set of questions we might ask of the nominees so that we are uniform with our request for information.
Regional Outings/Reunions—Brian Hayes summarizing
Symphony on the Prairie is August 11, The Indianapolis Colts outing is September 27, The Chicago outing at the Rock Bottom is December 10, the journalism alumni reunion is set for June 21, 2008.
Discussion centered around the reunion. Ideas included:
• Making "Save the Date" cards for the reunion.
• The reunion will be hosted at A-J and the alumi Center
• Cruise casual dress will be the order of the day, we will have a tour of campus, a casual dinner with entertainment, and journalism items for sale. We need to find "point people" from each decade to help encourage attendance. We might invite Charlie Cardinal and also investigate having the carillon playing at some point during the day.
The committee will meet soon to flesh out more details.
