FCS Meeting Minutes, May 17, 2006

Members Present: Diane Blankenship, Trish Bowerman, Amy Bradburn, Corine Carr, Suzie Huber, Jackie Johnston, Jama Kirby Montgomery, Marla Kurtz, Jeanine LeMaster, Barbara Norrick, Joe Oliver, Alice Spangler, Sharon Stephen, Sue Taylor, Linda Wallace, and Sandra Wimmer. President Suzie Huber called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. New member Trish Bowerman was welcomed and introductions were made.

Following a motion by Linda Wallace to approve the February 22, 2006 meeting minutes, the motion was seconded by Barbara Norrick, and the minutes were unanimously approved as written.

OLD BUSINESS
Communique Newsletter—Marla reported that data has been compiled and a new design is being developed for an electronic mailing in the near future.

FCS History Committee—Alice reported on the committee's March 2006 meeting. Data is being verified and edited. The project is in the graphic design stage. The first output will be an FCS timeline, with an anticipated completion in time for an FCS anniversary event.

Sue reported that the FCS Alumni Society Fund, Foundation Account #3905, has a balance of $591. There was a $20 expense for engraving on a portfolio for the 2006 recipient of the FCS Outstanding Senior Award.

NEW BUSINESS
2006 Career Mentoring Day—The confirmed date is Thursday, October 26, 2006. Sue circulated a sign-up sheet for board members to volunteer to call potential presenters in the various program areas. She will provide names and contact information in June so that calls can be started, and hopefully finalized by August 4. (After the meeting Sue confirmed that alumni who had indicated they would be interested for 2006 have been noted).

Board suggestions for Keynote speaker included Wil Davis, co-founder of Ontario Corporation; Judith O'Bannon, former Indiana first lady; Barbara Norrick, manager, Kohl's Department Store, Muncie. Alice will begin contacting prospects soon.

FCS Alumni Ghyslain Chocolatier Event—Wednesday, June 28, 2006. Sharon explained that Ghyslain makes hand-made chocolates and desserts, furnished to restaurants such as Vera Mae, and sold internationally. The event cost is $18.15 and includes a tour and lunch. A shop to purchase chocolates will be available. Board members are encouraged to attend and bring guests. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, June 21. A van provided by the BSUAA is available with limited seating. Those who wish to caravan with it can meet in the Alumni Center parking lot at 9:15-9:20 a.m.

2007 FCS Awards Day—Saturday, April 14, 2006. Discussion about the program, meal time, entertainment, and student involvement followed. Jackie Johnston mentioned that a tour of the Back To School Teacher's Store could also be available following the event. Committees formed included:

  • Planning Committee—Trish Bowerman, Amy Bradburn, Jama Kirby-Montgomery, Jeanine LeMaster, Barbara Norrick, Alice Spangler, Sue Taylor.
  • Awards Criteria Committee—Jackie Johnston, Alice Spangler, Sue Taylor, and Linda Wallace.

DEPARTMENT UPDATE
Alice Spangler reported on the Department:

  • The FCS Self-Study has been submitted as part of the AAFCS accreditation process. The AAFCS council met in March and again in May. The potential site visit will be in the fall.
  • Department renovations continue, with a June 15 deadline to suggest changes and improvements.
  • Students traveled to London and Paris during Spring Break. Summer trips include Australia and Malaysia.
  • Val Birk was able to meet with FCS Alumni Award of Achievement Recipient Angela Ahrendts at Burberry, and presented her award.
  • The FCS Student Awards Program was Friday, April 21. Appreciation was expressed to Suzie Huber, who presented the Outstanding Senior Award to the 2006 recipient, Meagan Hennenfent.
  • The May 6, 2006 Commencement ceremony for the College of Applied Sciences and Technology was held in Worthen Arena at 3:00 p.m.
  • FCS alumni and faculty have been featured in various publications as follows: Sarah Atkinson, Janet Fick, Debbie Foster, and Joan McFadden were in newspaper articles. Jackie Johnston and Barbara Norrick received 2006 VIVA Awards for their voluntary service in Muncie.

ALUMNI COUNCIL UPDATE
Jackie Johnston reported on the April 29, 2006 Council meeting. She began by suggesting that Board members make an effort to connect with FCS students, with the directors visiting their professionally-related student organization meetings and then reporting back to the board.

  • President Gora addressed the Alumni Council. She had recently participated with First Lady Laura Bush in Ball State's Electronic Field Trip to Carlsbad Caverns, NM, with 36 million viewers across the country.
  • Recent administrative appointments include a new provost, Terry King, from Kansas State; head men's basketball coach, Ronny Thompson from Arkansas; and vice president for University Advancement, Ben Hancock, from Albion College.
  • The strategic plan for the next five years places emphasis on experiential and immersive learning.
  • The thrust of Ball State's new marketing campaign will be to show our educational quality and innovation.
  • Homecoming is set for October 21 and Fall Break will occur October 29-31.
  • Currently, the second phase of the McKinley renovation extends from Petty Road north to Bethel Avenue. It will be completed at the end of August. By fall 2007 Ball State expects to have completed the stadium renovation, a new communications building, and a new residence hall.
  • The percentage of alumni giving is one of the significant tools that U.S. News and World Report uses for its rankings of universities. Achieving higher rankings is a goal to which the university aspires. Gifts of any amount by July 31 will be included in this total.
  • In addition to current BSUAA affinity programs, a new graduate auto/home insurance program with AIA and Liberty Mutual Insurance is being offered.
  • Partnership with the Ball State Federal Credit Union was renewed.
  • 2006-07 Alumni Legacy Scholarships of $1,600 each will go to 50 students selected from 157 applications.
  • Recipients of the 2006 BSUAA Distinguished Alumni Award, Benny Award, and G.O.L.D. Award were determined for recognition at Homecoming. FCS alumna Heidi Clark will receive a G.O.L.D. Award.
  • The May 2006 issue of the Ball State Alumnus magazine was printed in full-color for the first time. Council requested that funding opportunities be researched to enable continuation of full color usage.
  • The next Council meeting is Saturday, September 9 in conjunction with the BSU vs. IU football game.


The next FCS Board of Directors meeting will be Tuesday, September 19, 2006, 5:30 p.m., hosted by Joe Oliver at the recently renovated McDonald's Restaurant, 901 East McGalliard Road, (across from the Muncie Mall). Joe volunteered to provide a tour and our meals.
