MCOB Meeting Minutes, November 8, 2005

Present: Boldt, Budreau, Downey, Earley, Heeter, Ittenbach, Jacoby, Klee, Richardson, Taylor, Walbridge and Westfall

Heeter called the meeting to order at 3:40 p.m. Earley moved to approve the August 9, 2005 meeting minutes and Ittenbach seconded. It was unanimously approved.

Alumni Council Report
Budreau reported on some of the activities that other Ball State alumni societies and chapters host to connect with their alumni, such as golf outings or the Symphony on the Prairie event. She suggested that MCOB Alumni Board consider hosting something new. She indicated that the next Alumni Council meeting will be January 21, 2006.

Dean's Report
Richardson spoke about Rod Davis, Ray Montagno and others traveling to Mississippi to find ways to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Approximately 95% of businesses in the area were destroyed. Their ideas included partnering with CICS to help to get a wireless network up and running since all communications need to be rebuilt. Another idea they have is to take students there in April to help citizens with their tax returns.

Richardson reported about the MCOB, Computer Sciences and CICS collaborating on an Organizational Assurance and Information Security Center (OAsIS) and will apply to the NSA for certification as such a center.  If certified, she said it will put the college on the map. More details in Business magazine.

Richardson said the student awards and recognition brunch is set for Saturday, December 3, 2005 with donors. Pat Botts '86, President and COO at Mutual Federal Savings Bank, and Lucy Bright will speak, as well as three students, who will tell what receiving scholarships meant to them.

She also mentioned that U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) organization of entrepreneurial and business students is currently housed at the U of Wisconsin but is looking for a new home. The Dean is trying to get it moved to Ball State, and the responsibility of administrating the organization would then be someone on the MCOB faculty.

Regarding recruiting efforts in the MCOB, Richardson reported that positions are open in Marketing, Accounting and Finance and Insurance. BSU hosted a sales competition November 5, for Sales students from BSU, IU and Purdue. Five out of six of our students received unprecedented scores of 100 or better. A Purdue student took overall first place while a Ball State student took second. Our training facilities were envied by the other schools.

Richardson reported that the Phonathon is going well. The first night callers received $12, 070 in pledges. The dean has already spent that money on a donor recognition wall which will be installed early in 2006. President Gora met with the departments in the MCOB and two main agenda items were made known: a new campus recreation center and re-energizing the Greek system. Heeter asked Richardson what she needs from the board and she said that connecting with people is her top-priority.

2nd Annual Alumni Awards Dinner
Heeter led a discussion to review the October Alumni Awards Dinner. Thoughts for next year included keeping it not-so-serious in tone, encouraging the memories and photos (since the audience was drawn in especially by those in Oklak's presentation), and having salads and desserts pre-set again to reduce serving time. The board agreed that the length of the reception and the program were good and that ideas for favors are needed. Richardson has reserved the Alumni Center for September 8, 2006, the weekend that BSU plays IU in football. Some type of package deal may be offered to participants. Downey agreed to chair the event, and it was suggested that a letter go out before year-end to potential sponsors, enabling them to put this into their 2006 budget plans.

Award Candidates
Heeter discussed the results of the Award Committee's recommendations. He read the highlights of each nominee, and stressed the importance of bringing new names to the table. Ittenbach suggested that Heeter send the information on all candidates discussed so the board could make further recommendations. Earley moved to approve the nominations and Klee seconded. The motion carried. Lynne will send letters to the recipients so that they may get this date on their calendars.

Dialogue Days
In the absence of Replogle, Richardson reported on Dialogue Days. In October we had 61 speakers in 93 classes over two days. She suggested adding a second Dialogue Days each spring and fall and the board agreed that it is a great concept and wants to move forward with one in spring 2006. Richardson also noted that Replogle will be retiring in June.

"Pride" Exercise
Heeter distributed results of the "Pride" exercise and it was agreed to discuss the findings at the February meeting. The two pages contain thoughts that the members had indicated on MCOB areas they are proud of and what they would like to be proud of in five years.

Young Alumni Event
Members discussed hosting a dinner and basketball game for young MCOB alumni and graduating seniors. It was decided that a meal would be served at the MCOB followed by walking to the men's basketball game on February 22, 2006. Richardson will provide any needed parking passes and work with the ticket office to obtain block seating. It was also agreed that some of the proceeds from the awards dinner will take care of dinner costs, and the cost of the game tickets will be charged to participants. Alumni invited will be graduates from 2000-2005. This Board is encouraged to attend.

Potential Electronic Network
Richardson brought up a concept of having a business alumni network and distributed an article relating details about Iowa State's program. Richardson suggested having a web page that shows a U.S. map, where one could click on any geographical location and the result would be a listing of business alumni in that area who are willing to assist a student in making a networking connection. She proposed pushing an e-mail to alumni to build this network. Initial response of board members was positive, with some questions about privacy and page maintenance being asked.

Expiring Terms
Taylor reported that five board member's terms were expiring December 31, 2005, and each has agreed to remain for another three-year term.

The next meeting will be February 22 at the MCOB at 3:30 p.m. followed by young alumni dinner and basketball game event. Note: This is a change in date.

The meeting was adjourned by Heeter at 5:12 p.m.
