Outings—Charlotte Shepperd reported on the Indianapolis Area Alumni Picnic and Indians Baseball Game Saturday, June 4, 2005. Journalism turnout was not as expected. Promotion for the event was through e-mail and including a special invitation to journalism alumni in the general mailing to all area alumni. Discussion for future events centered around ways to improve visibility and modes of contact with journalism constituents.
Homecoming 2005 will be the week of October 10, with Homecoming Day Saturday, October 15. Waechter updated the board on prospective plans for Journalism Family Weekend, which will be during Homecoming weekend. The board would be involved and the Journalism Alumni Society would be invited. Friday, October 14, students and their parents will be invited to visit the department and campus for open houses, tours, and presentations. Following advisory group meetings in the morning, parents and alumni will be invited to the Professional-In-Residence program and then lunch with scholarship recipients. Workshops, portfolio reviews, and a reception are tentatively planned for the afternoon. A Journalism Alumni Society board of directors meeting could follow. Homecoming Day, Saturday, October 15, journalism alumni, students, and parents, would be encouraged to participate in Homecoming Day events. Following discussion, the board agreed to take part, and the board meeting will be Friday, October 14, 2:30 p.m., Art and Journalism Building.
Hayes reported that two board logos were accepted by University Communications. Following discussion and review, Jim Grim made a motion to select logo #1 using a sans serif font. Deborah Robinson seconded the motion, and it was approved by voice vote. The logo will be used on marketing items for the Journalism Alumni Society. Tote bags are an idea being considered.
Long-Range Planning/Initiatives—Shepperd distributed a list of 2005 initiatives for discussion and review. The initiatives, with their description are attached with the minutes. In summary, the board approved as follows. Committees for all initiatives will include Hayes, Shepperd, Waechter, and Weaver:
Initiative 1—Continue to sponsor a Professional-in-Residence program annually.
Initiative 2—Executed/Continue. Combine with Initiatives 8 and 9. Committee to establish criteria: Gayle Berry, Jim Grim, Sarah Maisto, Pam Records. The department and board also will be involved. The department will prepare certificates. A representative of the board will be on hand to present them.
Initiative 3—Currently working toward this effort. Combine with Initiative 7. David Knott and SarahMaisto volunteered to serve on this committee.
Initiative 4—Combine with Initiative 5. Pamela Records and Deborah Robinson volunteered to serve on the committee. Sheryl Swingley also will be invited to serve as a department representative.
Initiative 6—Committee: Pamela Records and Deborah Robinson. Layne Cameron also will be asked.
Initiative 10—The board will be more involved with the Louis E. Ingelhart Scholarship.
Initiative 11—Delete.
Initiative 12—The board will provide individual assistance on an "as needed" basis.
Award nominee lists were distributed for the board's review. The lists will be updated and provided at the next board meeting.
Following discussion regarding the change of the name from association to society, Deborah Robinson moved to adopt the title of Journalism Alumni Society and to adopt the name of the governing body as Board of Directors. Bob Jonason seconded the motion, and it was passed by voice vote. The Constitution and By-Laws will be amended, accordingly.
Department Update
Dan Waechter reported that there have been some staff changes. One contract position will be discontinued. Three new faculty will start this fall: Scott Reinardy will teach in the news editorial sequence; Brian Hayes has been hired to replace Mark Herron in the secondary education position; Mary Spillman, most recently with WRTV, replaces Larry Dailey and will head some new media efforts. Linda Dailey, department administrative coordinator, has left and Arlene Shirk has been hired for her position.
The sports panel program, April 26-27, was very successful. A number of students attended and had great opportunities to hear six speakers and two panel discussions over the course of the two-day event. The program was Webcast and DVDs were made for distribution to high schools and others who are interested. Guest presenters included Vince Doria, Jeremy Schapp, Beth Harris, Don Yaeger, Bob Kravitz, and Mike Lopresti.
The Kalisch Photo Editing workshop will be hosted on campus the first two weeks of June. The department expects 40 photojournalists here for each session. On the Ball, a three-day, staff-based workshop for advisors and students, will be June 18-20. Summer workshops begin the week of July 26. A re-grant proposal is being made to the Knight Commission to retain the J-IDEAS program.
A bill has been passed through the U.S. Congress establishing September 17 each year as a day to observe the First Amendment. All schools who receive federal funding are expected to comply. Ball State will plan a program to acknowledge the day.
New Dean, Roger Lavery, will officially begin duties July 1. Friday, June 17, Marilyn Weaver and Mike Smith are co-hosting a communities think-tank on the topic, "The Changing Structure of Media." It will look at the concept of community journalism.
Juli Metzger is returning to Muncie as publisher of the Muncie Star-Press and the Marion Chronicle Tribune.
Waechter encouraged the board to review the department Web site. He also presented an update on the Professional-in-Residence programs. There is a plan for a presentation in September; one in October, perhaps in conjunction with the October 13-15 programming; a panel program in November, and another next spring.
Alumni Council
The Alumni Council has not met since the previous board meeting. It will meet later in the day. Committees are meeting and will determine alumni award recipients, review service projects, and establish a prospective slate of officers and board members for 2006.
Other Business
Waechter announced that the Spring 2006 Professional-in-Residence will be a sports venue and September will be a Constitution effort. All PnR programs will be Web cast. Also, the department Web site has been updated to include a highlight of board members. Members were requested to submit a brief bio to Waechter.
