Nursing Meeting Minutes, August 30, 2005
Board Members Present: Diane Blankenship, Mary Buckley, Phyllis Chapin, Kathy Hutson, Doreen Johnson, Ernie Krug, Connie McIntosh, Brandy Renz, Ruth Ann Tolle.

President Connie McIntosh called the meeting to order at 5:40 p.m. and asked for any corrections or additions to the minutes of the April 5 Nursing Alumni board of directors meeting.  Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the minutes as presented.  Phyllis Chapin seconded the motion and the minutes were approved by voice vote.

Old Business

Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Friday, May 6, 2005 Review—The consensus was that it went well.

2005 Nursing Alumni Banquet—Following discussion regarding some concerns and suggestions that were expressed at the 2005 Banquet, a Banquet Review Committee was formed.  Committee members are Connie McIntosh, Mary Buckley, Ernie Krug, and Linda Siktberg.

Nursing Historical Project—Krug reported that Pat McCallister continues to research and compile data.  She is also working with Charlotte Shepperd, Director, Alumni Communications, Alumni Association.

New Business

2005-2006 Board of Directors Slate—There are member-at-large terms open for 2005-2007 and 2005-2008. Three nominations were made:  Mario Contreraz, BSN 2004; Delisa Flynn, BSN 2004; and Nadia Hoage, BSN 2002.  Following discussion, Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve Contreraz, Flynn, and Hoage as members-at-large of the Nursing Alumni Association Board of Directors.  Mary Buckley seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.  Brandy Renz will contact Contreraz, Flynn, and Hoage to confirm their membership acceptance. 

2005-2006 Proposed Budget—Following review and discussion, Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the 2005-2006 Budget as presented.  Mary Buckley seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.

Department Update

The School of Nursing is scheduled for accreditation site visit October 12-14, 2005 by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Fall Semester 2005 student enrollment is 85.  The number graduating in December 2005 is 36.  the number graduating in May 2005 is 72.

Additional high fidelity equipment has been purchased as follows:  Noelle, a simulated labor and delivery mother, SimBaby, a birthing bed, a fetal monitor, and an infant warmer.  Conversion is in process for a maternal and pediatric area to house the child bearing/child rearing families segment of the department's program.

The May 2005 pass rate is 98%.  From 62 graduates, 50 have taken the licensure exam and 49 have passed.
 

Alumni Council Update

Hutson reported that the Alumni Council met Saturday, June 11, 2005.  She highlighted a few of the many programs and services available to BSU alumni by the Alumni Association, and she encouraged the board to visit the Web Site at:  http://www.bsu.edu/alumni

The next Alumni Council meeting is Saturday, September 10, 2005.

Alumni Association Update

Krug reported that Alumni Association professional/constituent groups are now organized as societies and that an effort is being made to change the titles of groups that formed as associations to societies.  Also, Alumni geographic area groups are now organized as chapters.  Discussion of changing the Nursing Alumni Association title to Society will be scheduled for a future meeting.  It was requested that Webster's definition of Society and Chapter be included in the meeting Agenda, when this business is scheduled for a future board of directors meeting.   

Other Business

Community Project Materials—McIntosh reported that all materials for the project are stored at the Muncie Children's Museum, where the interactive project is available.  She also reported that "Teddy's Tips" can no longer be printed on fliers because the Museum has discontinued the use of loose printed materials. Following discussion, McIntosh volunteered to look into producing "Teddy's Tips" on laminated posters and have them mounted according to the Museum's guidelines.

It was agreed to schedule a board meeting once a year at the School of Nursing and perhaps also incorporate a pizza gathering with the students.  The idea of alternating with a board meeting at Ball Memorial Hospital, was also discussed.

Homecoming 2005 will be celebrated October 10-15, culminating Homecoming Day, Saturday, October 15.  The idea of participating in the Homecoming Parade on October 15 was discussed, and it was agreed to submit an entry.  McIntosh will submit the entry and arrange a virtual meeting to discuss the details.  The entry will be paid by the BSU Foundation Nursing Alumni Fund.

Kathy Hutson and Brandy Renz volunteered to serve as board representatives to meet with the December 2005 graduating class.  Chapin will take care of scheduling the meeting and contacting Hutson and Renz.

The next Nursing Alumni board of directors meeting will be Wednesday, October 5, 2005, 5:30 p.m., Alumni Center, Conference Room 1.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
