FCS Meeting Minutes, May 18, 2005
Members Present: Angela Abbott, Diane Blankenship, Tim Hill, Suzie Huber, Bonnie Johnston, Jackie Johnston, Jama Kirby Montgomery, Marla Kurtz, Jeanine LeMaster, Joe Oliver, Alice Spangler, Sharon Stephen, Sue Taylor, and Linda Wallace.

President Suzie Huber called the meeting to order at 6:14 p.m.  Following a motion by Linda Wallace to approve the February 8, 2005 meeting minutes, Tim Hill seconded, and the minutes were unanimously approved as written.

ALUMNI COUNCIL UPDATE

Jackie Johnston reported the following:

  • Jo Ann Gora was inaugurated as Ball State's President on March 29 at the Indiana Statehouse.  The occasion included an Inauguration Scholarship Celebration for 25 student recipients and the 25 benefactors who made gifts of $10,000 each.  The Alumni Association was first to provide funding for the scholarships.
  • The Alumni Association awarded a total of $80,000 to 50 Legacy Scholarship recipients.
  • "52 Ways You Can Help Ball State," was distributed for reference.  It was published in the November 2004 issue of the Ball State Alumnus magazine.
  • The next Alumni Council meeting is Saturday, June 11, 2005 in conjunction with Alumni College and Symphony On The Green.

DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Alice Spangler reported the following:

  • 2005 Spring Semester activities included an awards program with excellent attendance.  Tara Barker received the Outstanding Senor Award and was presented with a gift from the FCS Alumni Society.  Spangler presented a video that was developed by Tara as her thesis in the Honors Program.  It is being used as a recruitment tool to promote the FCS department. 
  • Interior Design is putting a room together as a gallery exhibition of projects.
  • A Ball State FCS student was the overall winner of the National Kitchen/Bath Competition, which included five different schools.
  • Three students of the Dietetic program were awarded scholarships, and there were 18 who received dietetic internship or assistantship placements.

OLD BUSINESS

Communique Newsletter—Marla reported that the newsletter is scheduled to be mailed by end of May. Board member Barbara Norrick will be the spotlight profile. The on-line newsletter option will be included in the issue and will be available on the FCS Web site.  Board member Sharon Stephen will be the spotlight profile for the Fall 2005 issue.

FCS History Committee—Alice reported that nothing new has developed.

Sue reported that the FCS Alumni Society Fund, Foundation Account #3905, had expenditures for award plaques presented at the 2005 FCS Spring Alumni Day, leaving a balance of just over $600.

2005 Spring Alumni Day Review—Positive comments were given. The attendance was good. The Saturday brunch was better received than the 2003 evening program in conjunction with the FCS Symposium.

NEW BUSINESS

FCS Awards Criteria Committee Review—It was agreed that if the number of award recipients is to continue to increase, the current selection guidelines need to be amended. In addition, criteria needs to be established by the Awards Committee for the new FCS awards that will be given at the 2007 Spring Alumni Day.  A Committee meeting will be scheduled. Members are:  Suzie Huber, Jackie Johnston, Jama Kirby Montgomery, Alice Spangler, and Sue Taylor.

Future FCS Alumni Events—Following discussion, Angela Abbott, Suzie Huber, and Jeanine LeMaster volunteered to serve as the Events Committee to plan 2006 alumni events.  Jeanine will serve as chairman.

2005 FCS Career Mentoring Day—Two potential dates are Friday, October 28 or Thursday, November 17.  (Since the meeting, October 28 is the date.)  Sue reported that lists of prospective speakers will be ready in June and board members are needed to contact alumni on the lists.  The following volunteered:  Suzie Huber, Bonnie Johnston, Jama Kirby Montgomery, Jeanine LeMaster, Joe Oliver, Sharon Stephen, Linda Wallace, and Sandra Wimmer.  Three alumni speakers are needed from each program. 

Sue Taylor reported that an on-line Interior Design Alumni Survey will be activated in relation to 2006 accreditation at the request of Reza Ahmadi.

OTHER BUSINESS

It was reported that the e-mentoring program received positive feedback and was successful.

The next board meeting will be in conjunction with 2005 FCS Career Mentoring Day, tentatively October 28 or November 17. (Since the meeting, October 28 is the date.)
