President David Heeter called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m.
Alumni Council Report
Jacoby reported highlights from the June 11, 2005 Alumni Council meeting. Trustee Hollis Hughes stated that tuition would go up approximately 4.2 percent. The freshman class SAT scores are down one point from last year. The Alumni Legacy Scholarship Committee awarded 50 recipients for the $1,600 stipends. Distinguished Alumni will be honored at the Homecoming Awards Dinner on October 14. Ann Johnson, Morry Mannies and Eugene G. White will be honored, as well as Benny Award recipients and G.O.L.D. Award recipients. Jacoby also reported the next Alumni Council meeting will be held on September 10, 2005 prior to the football game against Bowling Green.
College Report
Ray Montagno reported that Larry Cox was named the new director for the Entrepreneurship program. There have also been several other hires over the summer. "The Big Sky Brewing Company" case study will impact 2100 students throughout the school year. MCOB faculty have had 60 articles published over the past year, an increase from the previous year. MCOB is starting to host some additional alumni events for MCOB grads. Ray and Lynne met with alumni in San Francisco and Elkhart. One event was planned for young alumni at an Indianapolis Indians game; but there wasn't enough interest from the targeted audience for the event to take place. The MCOB Executive Committee held a strategic planning meeting in May.
Alumni Awards Dinner
Earley reported they have collected $15,000 in sponsorship which is an increase from last year. Estep reiterated the final RSVP date is August 26. They asked for help from the Alumni Board in selling tables/tickets. Heeter suggested that the board call past attendees to personally invite them. Klee, Downey, Ittenbach and Westfall all agreed to help. As of our meeting date, there were 37 reservations. You may now register online at the MCOB website (http://www.bsu.edu/cob/awards/). They will send one more e-mail blast. Several people volunteered to host an award recipient during the evening: Heeter-Oklak, Downey-Berghorn, Earley-Anderson, Imler-Porter, Ittenbach-Smith, Taylor- Brown-Miller. Estep said that any remaining will be assigned and she will notify the board member. Estep distributed a budget for last year's award dinner and reported that assuming we have roughly the same number in attendance this year, the budget for the 2005 dinner will be very similar. Heeter reminded the group that the purpose of this dinner is not to raise money but to recognize people that have given back to college in one or many ways. He also reminded the group that money raised needs to go to events the MCOB Alumni Board hosts or promotes, including the Advanced Professionalism Certificate for students.
New Business
Pride Exercise
Heeter asked each board member to write down three things that they are proud of regarding the MCOB. He then asked them to write down three things they would LIKE to be proud of in five years. Heeter will report on the findings at our next meeting, November 8, 2005.
Dialogue Days
Replogle said that three sets of letters will be going out electronically to alumni asking them to participate in this year's project. They will send letters to past participants, alumni board, advisory board and alumni that MCOB faculty members have met through outreach efforts. She is adding evening class sections as options for this year's Dialogue. Junior and senior classes will be filled up first. Heeter suggested that some of the money raised at the awards dinner be used to pay for the sack lunches provided to speakers, and the board gave verbal agreement.
Webpage
Estep talked about a new initiative planned for the MCOB web site. They want to reach out to alumni on their own special page. She asked the group to support this effort through finding alumni they can profile on the page. Lynne has already sent 60 people an e-mail invitation to be profiled and she has received about eight positive responses. A couple of individuals have said they didn't think their experience to date qualified them to be profiled. Out of this discussion came the idea of targeting younger alumni in a different way. Estep will take the discussion ideas back to the college.
Letter Writing Campaign
Replogle reported that there will no longer be a campaign of this sort. They have not gotten the yield they were looking for so they are going to try a new approach. Ittenbach suggested bringing the "campaign" down to the peer level. Replogle will take the ideas discussed back to the college. Replogle also handed out the statistics from the Advance Professionalism Certificate program, noting that Craig Dunn is the keynote speaker for the kick-off event on August 31, 2005.
Spring Event for Graduating Seniors
Heeter mentioned that the MCOB wants to come up with an event for seniors. Montagno proposed that an option might be to offer these events on a program/major basis, stating the end of the year Entrepreneurship dinner for majors has been very successful and that targeted events might yield a higher turnout. Most of the board of directors agreed that an event for seniors this would be a good event for our board to host and it falls within our constitution and purpose. There was consensus that hosting a gathering at commencement time might compete with too many other events. The idea of hosting a spaghetti dinner before a basketball game where seniors are invited to come and network with folks from the business world received positive response.
