Journalism Meeting Minutes, April 5, 2005
Present: Layne Cameron, Brian Hayes, Bob Jonason, John Ketzenberger, David Knott, Deborah Robinson, Charlotte Shepperd, Dan Waechter, Marilyn Weaver, and Diane Blankenship.

The meeting was called to order by President Brian Hayes at 1:45 p.m., following the Journalism Awards Luncheon.  Referring to the minutes of the January 22, 2005 meeting, he asked for corrections or additions.  There being none, Bob Jonason moved to accept the minutes as presented, Deborah Robinson seconded, and they were passed by voice vote.

Notebooks were distributed which included materials related to the Journalism Alumni Association, board, and BSU Alumni Association.  Members who were absent will be mailed notebooks.  Marilyn Weaver reported that the department is contemplating providing tote bags for board members.

Business

Outings—Charlotte Shepperd reported that 13 attended the Journalism Alumni Pre-game Outing Saturday, March 5, 2005.  The total cost of the event was $210.11, which included the buffet, basketball game tickets, and credit card fees.  There were no costs for printing and postage because the event was publicized via e-mail and the Winter 2004 issue of Phoenix.

Shepperd sent an e-mail to the board regarding an opportunity for a journalism alumni outing in conjunction with the Alumni Association Churchill Downs event on May 14, 2005.  The board decided not to promote the event as a journalism outing.  It was agreed that it is still an advantage to link with other Alumni Association events.

Following discussion of a few opportunities for Journalism alumni outings, it was agreed to join the BSU Greater Indianapolis Area Alumni Club Picnic and Indians Baseball Game Saturday, June 4, 2005.  Shepperd will request a journalism alumni e-mail list and an e-mail will be sent, in addition to the mailer that advertises Indy-area activities to all Indianapolis-area alumni.

Homecoming 2005 will be the week of October 10, with Homecoming Day Saturday, October 15.  Dan Waechter reported that Journalism Family Weekend falls during Homecoming weekend and students and their parents visit the department and campus for open houses, tours, and presentations.  It was suggested that a breakfast, lunch, or other program might be planned in conjunction with Homecoming for journalism alumni participation, as well as journalism students, their parents, and recipients of student awards and scholarships.  A support corps for attendance and participation would be needed, including the board, sequence advisory councils, faculty, and alumni.  Further discussion was tabled until another meeting.

Long-Range Planning/Initiatives—Shepperd reported that the committee met February 3 to review and build on the initiatives of 2000-01.  In summary, the following was recommended for the board's discussion:

Present recognition certificates to graduating seniors at the April 15, 2005 Journalism Banquet.

Initiative 1—Professional-In-Residence—Incorporate a recruitment effort and board meeting in conjunction with the program, targeted for Fall 2005.

Initiative 2—Establish a student/alumni mentoring program.

Initiative 5—Continue planning outings to generate more alumni involvement and also have reunions every five years.  The next reunion would be 2008.

Initiative 8—Utilize journalism award recipients as a pool for participation in classrooms/organizations.

An initiatives list will be compiled and provided to the board for further input and board initiative committees will be established from that.

Demographics—Shepperd distributed BSU journalism alumni demographics maps for Indiana and the United States.  There are a total of 3,131 in Indiana with a total of 6,158 in the U.S.

President Hayes circulated board logo designs for the board's review.  Two logos were identified to forward through the university approval process.  Layne Cameron will follow through with the process.  After approval, the logo might be used for tote bags, notebooks, and other materials.

Shepperd reported that Ball State University Alumni Association professional groups are now organized as societies and that an effort is being made to change the titles of groups that formed as associations to societies.   Journalism, Teachers College, and Nursing are the only groups that are grandfathered as associations.  It was agreed to bring a motion to the next board meeting to start the official change process.

Journalism award nominee status will be reviewed for action at the next board meeting.

Department Update

Plans are in place for the Department of Journalism's Sports Panel/Professional-in-Residence program.  It will be Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26-27, and will be labeled as sponsored by the Journalism Alumni Association.  Shepperd said that a push e-mail will be sent to all journalism alumni with e-mail addresses to promote the sports panel.

Weaver reported that the department is interviewing for a news-editorial tenure-line position. Mark Herron's position is also open.

The end -of-year gala to recognize seniors is set for April 15.  Cardinal Communications is helping organize the event. Kappa Tau Alpha recently recognized scholarship recipients with scholarships ranging from $300 to $3,000 and totaling $27,000.

The regional PRSSA conference will be hosted April 9 on campus.  The Kalisch Workshop will return again this summer. It will be in June.

Roger Lavery, from Northern Arizona State, has been appointed as the new CCIM dean. Lavery, whose background is in advertising, will officially begin duties July 1.

J-IDEAS continues to get good promotion.  The department is in the process of working with the Knight Foundation for a future grant.  The current grant expires in December.  The department is also exploring ways to maintain positions and programs as the Lilly grant comes to a close.

J-Day is April 29 on campus.  This is the program's 50th year.

The faculty voted in February to suspend all three minor programs.

Alumni Council

The Alumni Council will meet Saturday, June 11, 2005, in conjunction with Alumni College and the Symphony outing.  The journalism board will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Alumni Center, Conference Room 1.

Other Business

Hayes introduced new board member John Ketzenberger. He also thanked Weaver and the department for a fine luncheon program. Again, another outstanding group of award recipients was recognized.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:40 p.m.
