President Connie McIntosh called the meeting to order at 5:20 p.m. and announced Congratulations to Sherri White, who is a new grandmother to a granddaughter. Congratulations were also extended to Connie who has had her third child, a daughter.
Welcome and introductions were made of Brandy Renz, '03, prospective Nursing Alumni Board member, and Ashley Stewart, prospective BSN Program student and current BSUAA student assistant.
Connie asked for any corrections or additions to the minutes of the April 13, 2004 Nursing Alumni Board meeting. Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Jan Noel seconded the motion and the minutes were approved by voice vote.
Old Business
2004-2005 Nursing Alumni Board Slate—Following an overview of the Nursing Alumni Association Board and its goals, Brandy Renz accepted the position of Member-At-Large on the board, with her term ending August, 2007.
Community Service Project—Connie reported that the second video has been completed. The subject is dental hygiene using very large props. The scripts for the third and fourth videos are being developed and will be taped in the next few months. The third video will focus on safety. It was suggested to perhaps schedule a December 2004 or future board meeting at the Children's Museum and also observe our video and display.
Nursing Pinning Ceremony—Kathy Hutson reported that in the future, additional chairs are needed on stage. Eight chairs on the speakers side and three-five chairs on the other side.
New Business
2004-2005 Budget—Ernie Krug presented the proposed budget and gave an overview of line items. He also reviewed how the money in the budget is generated. Following discussion, Jan Noel made a motion to approve the 2004-2005 budget as proposed, Kathy Hutson seconded the motion and the budget was approved by voice vote.
Ball State Alumnus Magazine—Ernie requested board members to submit ideas/nursing alumni for consideration to be spotlighted in a future publication of the magazine. Shane House suggested the idea of spotlighting a former recipient of the Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award. Pat McCallister, a former recipient of the award and also a former board member, was suggested as a spotlight feature. Ruth Ann Tolle suggested coverage of the Community Service Project.
December 2004 Pinning Ceremony—The Pinning Ceremony will be Saturday, December 18, 2004, Emens Auditorium. Shane House and Kathy Hutson volunteered to meet with the class on Monday, September 27, 2004, 11:00 a.m., in the School of Nursing. Linda Siktberg will make the contacts and arrangements. Data for the Pinning program needs to be submitted to Diane Blankenship by Wednesday, November 10.
Department Update
Linda Siktberg reported the enrollment of 64 students for the 2004 Fall Semester and 16 are second degree students. There are 24 in the December 2004 graduating class, and there will be 65 in the May 2005 graduating class. The projected graduating class for December 2005 is 50.
The department is advertising for faculty and is also looking for additional clinical sites.
Christy Lehnertz, University Development, is working on hosting a fund-raising reception on October 1, 2004 in Florida for selected alumni in the Orlando area.
The department has received positive feedback support from new President Jo Ann M. Gora. Funding has been provided to purchase a "Sim-Man" mannequin, and a computerized cath/IV simulator is available.
Space renovation continues. The department has outgrown their area and is looking at converting some rooms to private clinical check-off areas. An invitation was extended for the board to visit the Fourth Floor to see the renovations that have already been made, to date.
Alumni Council Update
Kathy Hutson reported that the Alumni Council held a meeting on June 12, 2004 in conjunction with Alumni College. She shared the Nursing Community Service Project video with the Council and it went over very well. BSUAA recipients were selected for the Distinguished Alumni Award, Benny Award, and G.O.L.D. (Graduate of the last decade) Award. The honors will be presented at the Homecoming Alumni Association Awards Dinner on Friday, October 8, 2004. Kathy explained BSUAA services/programs and encouraged everyone to visit the BSUAA Web Site www.bsu.edu/alumni.
Alumni Association Update
Ernie reported that two receptions for President Jo Ann Gora were hosted by the BSUAA. There were 175 alumni and faculty/staff who attended the first reception and 275 Delaware County donors who attended the second reception. Jo Ann Johnston is also coordinating an upcoming reception for the president in Fort Wayne.
Other Business
Connie McIntosh requested that an email be sent to the board regarding interest in participation of the 2004 Homecoming Parade and also ideas for the 2004 December Nursing Alumni Board dinner. The Homecoming theme this year is Spark The Spirit and the entry deadline is September 17. If the board participates in the Parade, the entry fee will be transacted from the Alumni Relations line item of the budget. Diane Blankenship will send Homecoming Parade information and entry forms to Connie.
Kathy asked about the historical project from past discussion and where the materials are located. Connie will contact Pat McCallister to follow up with the historical materials.
Information for the 2005 issue of The Link Newsletter is needed by February 7, 2005. This includes selection of recipients for the 2005 Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award.
The Nursing Alumni Award Committee and Nursing Scholarship Committee will be formed at the December 2004 meeting.
The next Nursing Alumni Board meeting will be Tuesday, October 26, 2004, 5:15 p.m., Alumni Center Board Room. The board's Holiday Dinner meeting will be Monday, December 6, 2004, 5:15 p.m. The meeting and the dinner location will be determined.
