At the meeting, Tom DeWeese announced the appointment of President Jo Ann Gora and spoke about the presidential search. Greg Fehribach was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees and the term of Hollis Hughes was renewed. The annual awards dinner will be held on Friday, October 8 at the Alumni Center. The next Alumni Council meeting will be held on September 25.  The meeting will be followed by a pre-game rally and the evening game versus Western Michigan.

Departmental Report
Hugh stated that the department has 80 NREM majors and 16 new graduate students in NREM 608. The department has new international students from Armenia, Guatemala and Kazakhstan. Dr. Paul Chandler will be on sabbatical in the spring and will write a book on his international experiences. Chandler is also looking into setting up a field study in Jordan.  Dr. Thad Godish traveled to Ireland this summer and Hugh was in Hawaii working on a National Science Foundation course on volcanoes.

NREM is looking to establish a minor or certificate program in Homeland Security. The area would combine courses in areas such as biology, criminal justice, geology, geography and physiology. A distance education course is also in the works and will be offered in the spring.   The department is obtaining a new atomic absorption flame sprectrophotometer that will analyze metals, nutrients and various materials.

An electronic newsletter is being developed in order to supplement the mailed newsletter.  The upcoming fall phonathon efforts will go towards the Charles O. Mortensen Fellowship.  The department still needs $5,000 to endow the fellowship.

Hugh reported that the NR Club held their first meeting. The group had about 25 potential members in attendance. The students were not strictly NREM but were from a variety of majors (i.e., landscape architecture, biology).

Hugh, James Eflin and Tom Lowe are all members of the Council on the Environment. The Council intends to invite President Gora to one of their meetings and encourage her involvement and participation in campus environmental activities.  Tom Lowe has agreed to fund Ted Levin's visit via a $2,000 honorarium.  Tentatively, Levin will lecture on Thursday, April 21, 2005 during the Earth Week festivities. Once the time is confirmed, the department will focus on coordinating the publicity for his visit.

Membership Update
The board accepted nominations for the 2005-2006 NREM Alumni Society's vice president.  Denise was nominated by Terry and the motion was seconded by Tim. The motion passed. Denise declined and nominated Amanda. The motion was seconded by Danesa. This motion passed. Amanda was unanimously elected and accepted the position via telephone.

Career Day – Wednesday, November 10, 2004
Career Day will be the same format as last year and will be held in West Quad on November 10.   The program will run from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. and the NREM Alumni Society meeting will follow at 6:00 p.m. The suggestion was made that any panelist interested in returning should have at least a 3 year gap in appearances so that the current students see a variety of career options. It was also discussed that more private sector opportunities be represented. Jason H. volunteered to be a panelist and suggestions were made to Hugh for additional private sector contacts.

Internship Day – Tuesday, January 25, 2005
Jason H., Danesa, John B., Hugh and Sue will serve on the committee for Internship Day. They will meet at Fort Harrison State Park on October 26th at 4:00 p.m. Please make any participant suggestions – particularly representing the private sector – to a member of the committee.

Awards Dinner – Friday, April 22, 2005
The Awards committee will consist of John B., Hugh, Terry, Tim J. and Sue.  Thad suggested the board personally invite Dr. Siewert and Dr. Mortensen to the Awards Dinner. The board agreed. John B. suggested sending a small biography with the invitation to better promote Ted Levin.  Sue mentioned that she would like to connect with the publicity chair on the NR Club and get the club involved with publicizing NREM Internship Day for students on campus.

Annual Outings
Adopt a River.   Emily noted that there is an Adopt a River program the board could be involved with.  As part of the program, the board would sponsor a section of the river and once a year would have a canoe trip clean-up.  In return, a sign would be put in place noting the board's commitment to that section of the river. The board thought it would be a great opportunity.  Hugh suggested that the clean-up be done during the school year when the NR Club could participate. John B. noted that it would need to fall on the weekend of an away football game. John M. will look into the details and Emily will provide him with a contact for the Adopt a River program.

Float trip. The board decided that the float trip would become an annual event and would occur in different sections of river each time. Due to temperatures and water levels the board thought that May or June or fall might be the best times for a float trip. Danesa will look into the sections of water that the group could float.

Bike Ride. Emily, Danesa and Denise will look into a Cardinal Greenway bike ride for spring '05 with the ride potentially becoming an annual outing. Emily reminded the board that bikes are available to rent for those who need them.

Homecoming
Homecoming t-shirts can be personalized this year if there are at least 12 being ordered. If anyone is interested in having NREM Alumni printed on the back of the t-shirt, please let Laura know by September 17. The shirts are $10 and can be viewed at

Old Business – Float Trip, July 31
Danesa commended Schwartz's for a great float trip on July 31. She noted that the outing had almost 20 people (not all were board members!) and 9 boats. She reported that everything went smoothly and everyone seemed to have a good time. John B., Hugh, Emily, Amanda and Dean were all in attendance.
