Old Business
Community Service Project Update—Connie McIntosh made a presentation of the project and information was distributed for the board's review. The Mission Statement is to enhance the image of nursing in the community for school-aged children. The project is in collaboration with the Muncie Children's Museum (MCM) and will involve four quarterly showcases with Teddy Bear and registered nurse videos. The target audience is for children between the ages of three-seven. The projected, estimated budget is $7,580.00 and Ernie Krug stated that funds are available. Following discussion, Susan Alvis made a motion to approve the project and projected budget as presented. Jan Noel seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.
Linda Siktberg will coordinate the assignment of BSN students to assist at the display. In regard to assistance with marketing and public relations, she suggested the resources of the University Communications representative for the College of Applied Sciences & Technology. Linda also suggested that the BSU Office of Research may be of assistance with legal aspects (copyright on printed materials, etc.).
Sherri will contact MCM with questions regarding guidelines, services, etc.
A plaque for the gateway of the display will be needed. The board was requested to email text ideas to Connie (i.e., Presented By The Ball State University Nursing Alumni Association). Ernie said the plaque could be designed and ordered by the BSUAA.
In an effort to promote the project, Ruth Ann Tolle suggested having a table at the MCM Children's Health Fair on Saturday, April 3, 2004.
Nursing Alumni board members were requested to make donations of stethoscopes, lab jackets, scrubs, etc., and requests for donations from nursing alumni will also be publicized.
New Business
On behalf of the Awards Committee, Sherri presented the following recommendations as recipients for the 2004 Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award: Bette (Turner) Jones, '47; Carol (Miller) Sternberger, MS88; and, posthumously, JoAnne (Roesler) Wilson, '82. Following discussion, Doreen Johnson made a motion that Bette (Turner) Jones, Carol (Miller) Sternberger, and JoAnne (Roesler) Wilson be approved as recipients of the 2004 Award. Susan Alvis seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote. Sherri will contact the recipients.
2004 Fall Nursing Scholarships—The following recommendations were presented as scholarship recipients to receive a total of $6,010 for Fall 2004 tuitions:
Nursing Alumni Scholarship—Kelli Addison, Penny Armstrong, Connie Atchison, Jordan Blakely, Constance Clark, Christopher Sherron, Ami Sulkey, and Shanielle Woodard;
Ada & J. Richard Martin Scholarship—Jennifer King
Carolyn Jean Miller Memorial Nursing Scholarship—Connie Atchison
Jan Noel made a motion to approve the selection of 2004 Fall scholarship recipients. Kathy Hutson seconded the motion and it was approved by voice vote.
2004 Nursing Alumni Banquet—The Banquet will be Saturday, April 24 at the Alumni Center. Social Hour at 5:30 p.m., Dinner/Program at 6:30 p.m. Reservation cost is $20. There will be a tour of Ball Memorial Hospital and the BSU School of Nursing. There will be class reunions for the 50-Year Class of 1954, 41-Year Class of 1963, and Five-Year Class of 1999. Ernie will order the Award plaques for the recipients and he will also check the supply of 25- and 50-year charms. The catering for the Reception and Dinner has been contracted. Mary Buckley volunteered to order ten corsages. Phyllis Chapin, Kathy Hutson, and Connie McIntosh volunteered to assist with registration and welcoming the Award recipients.
2004 Nursing Alumni Spring Newsletter—In an effort to include more information about the School of Nursing, emphasize the Nursing Alumni Banquet, and defray costs, it was agreed that the School of Nursing will coordinate the publication process of the newsletter. Diane Williams and Sherri White will provide Nursing Alumni Association data to Linda Siktberg. March 1 is the target date for mailing.
2004 May Nursing Pinning Ceremony—The Pinning Ceremony will be Friday, May 7, 6:00 p.m., at Emens Auditorium. Rehearsal will be Thursday, May 6, 2:00 p.m., Emens Auditorium. There are 57 graduates. The class was informed that class photos are mandatory. Jan Noel and Kathy Hutson met with the class on February 16, 2004 to go over Pinning Ceremony guidelines. Other arrangements will be made as follows:
Equipment/Services—Kathy volunteered to work with Emens staff for equipment and service needs.
Pinning Ceremony Program—Data needs to be submitted to Diane Williams by April 2. The quantity will be increased from eight to ten programs per graduate. The junior class will be asked to distribute the programs. If not available, the BSU Cardinal Corps will be requested to distribute the programs.
Flowers/Scissors—Mary Buckley will order 57 carnations, and Sherri will order scissors. Connie McIntosh and Kathy Hutson volunteered to distribute the flowers and scissors.
Linda reported that the December 2004 Pinning Ceremony will also be at Emens Auditorium. It will be an evening ceremony.
2004-2005 Board Slate—Ernie reported that currently, there is one at-large position open on the Board. Shane House, '03, accepted membership with term ending July 31, 2007. Terms ending July 31, 2004 are: Susan Alvis, Jo Anne Johnston, and Jennifer Lakey. Susan agreed to serve a new term ending July 31, 2007. Kathy will contact Jennifer Lakey and Sherri will contact Jo Anne.

Department Update
Linda reported that there are 64 students admitted for Spring Semester 2004 and that there are over 80 applicants for Fall 2004. There are a number of international students applying, which makes a language barrier opportunity. The Second Degree track has 16 admitted for Fall 2004. Currently there are 34 faculty and more faculty and space are needed in the department.
More courses will be offered Summer 2004.
Alumni Council/Alumni Association Update
Ernie reported the following: At the January 10, 2004 Council meeting, the Council heard a Presidential Search Committee report from Board of Trustee President Tom DeWeese. The process will be a closed search. The committee, comprised of a cross section of individuals, is working with a search firm out of Atlanta.
Kathy will include a report about the Nursing Alumni Community Service Project at the next Council meeting, which will be on Saturday, June 12, 2004 in conjunction with Alumni College activities.
The next Nursing Alumni Board meeting will be Tuesday, April 13, 2004, 5:15 p.m., Alumni Center Board Room. Agenda items will include: 2004 Nursing Alumni Banquet, May 2004 Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Community Service Project update, and 2004-2005 Board slate update.
