Alumni Council Report
Mark Smith reported on the September 6 meeting of the Ball State University Alumni Council.
Wayne Estopinal reported that cost-cutting measures taken by the BSUAA have been effective in placing the Association in sound financial shape.
Tom DeWeese reported that athletic cuts have been accepted, and gave credit to Bubba Cunningham for tackling a very difficult situation. He also noted that Ball State's enrollment is up this year, and that its retention rate is good. DeWeese said that the Board had met the previous week to accept a gift from the Wallace T. Miller estate, which will be used in part for an endowed professorship in Phyllis Miller's name, and became the impetus for re-naming the College of Business in honor of the donor.
Mark Ervin reported on the Ball State University Foundation meeting June 28. In an effort to provide some insulation from prospective economic shock that can result from a volatile stock market, the Foundation is considering the establishment of a fee structure to cover operational expenses for account maintenance. He noted that the philosophical change is a great concern at this time.
The nominating committee presented this slate for 2004: Estinopal, president; Cathey Boggs, past president; Ervin, Foundation representative; Julie Bradshaw, president elect, and vice presidents Tom Cochrun, Tom Farris, Charles Green and Jo Ann Johnston.
Smith also commented on the success of the first-ever night time football game, its huge student participation, and record crowd of 23,000 to see Ball State defeat Indiana State.
Dean's Report
Lynne Richardson stated that gift dollars have doubled and donors have tripled for the College.
She also indicated that the Whitinger Building has undergone numerous areas of renovation to benefit students and faculty. The College is officially to be re-named the Miller College of Business, in honor of Wallace T. Miller, former Alumni Board member, faculty and owner of Miller's Merry Mansions, in a ceremony on November 13, 2003.
Richardson showed one of the new COB logo shirts available for purchase through the college, and said that the next issue of the Business magazine would be out in October. Page 19 of the magazine contains a nomination form for COB Alumni Awards.
She mentioned that the Entrepreneurship Program was recently ranked 5th in the country by US News.
Dialogue Week
Ittenbach stated that he had received 51 confirmations for speakers in classes for October 27-31, needed only a few more to complete the schedule if approximately
232 class sections. The College will furnish a "box" lunch to all speakers on the day they make their presentations, (Mutual Federal will underwrite cost). Replogle will plug the speakers in on a scheduling grid.
Letter-writing Campaign
Replogle reported that the first list of admitted students will be available in December, and the campaign will begin again.
Alumni Awards
Discussion on the type of event for presentation of awards included the concept of corporate tables being available. Richardson has holds on these dates: Friday, September 24, October 1 and October 8 at the Alumni Center. This event will be separate from the Student Scholarship banquet held each fall. A first time "executive in residence," Wayne Hiezeiga, might be available to provide remarks at the event. Heeter said that the Awards Committee would reconvene soon.
Receptions for Business Alumni
It was determined that snowy weather was a deterrent to our attendance last January, so a new date will be offered for a spring or summer reception in one or more locations. This discussion will continue at the next meeting.
Next Alumni Board meeting:
This board will meet on Thursday, January 15, 3:30 p.m. at the Alumni Center.
