Nursing Meeting Minutes, December 11, 2003
Board Members Present: Susan Alvis, Kathy Hutson, Ernie Krug, Sherri White, Ruth Ann Tolle, and Diane Williams

President Sherri White called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m.  She asked for any corrections or additions to the minutes of the October 28, 2003 Nursing Alumni Board meeting.  Kathy Hutson made a motion to approve the minutes as written.  Susan Alvis seconded the motion and the minutes were approved by voice vote.

Old Business

December 2003 Nursing Pinning Ceremony—Saturday, December 20, 2:00 p.m., Pruis Hall.  Rehearsal will be Friday, December 19, 2:00 p.m.  The BSU Orchestra will perform and the students are decorating a Christmas tree to be on stage. All arrangements have been made.

Community Service Project Update—Tabled until a future meeting.

New Business

A list of Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award nominees was distributed.  There are 11 active nominees for the 2004 Award.  The Award Recommendation Committee includes:  Sherri White, Chair; Susan Alvis, Pam Cole, and Kathy Hutson.  When the Committee meeting has been scheduled nominees materials with a list and worksheet will be mailed to each Committee member.  The Committee will bring their recommendations for the Award recipients to the next Board meeting.

Nursing Scholarships applications have been sent to the School of Nursing for distribution to students.  The application deadline is February 1 for Fall 2004 scholarships.  The following volunteered to serve as the Scholarship Selection Committee:    Phyllis Chapin, Kathy Hutson, Jan Noel, and Ruth Ann Tolle.  A copy of the completed applications and a worksheet will be sent to each Committee member after the February 1 deadline, and a Committee meeting will be scheduled.

Department Update

Ernie Krug reported that Cindy Thomas, School of Nursing faculty, is submitting a $16,830 proposal to the Lilly Foundation requesting assistance with funding to create a Living Room (CN111) for the nursing students to gather.  The proposal is part of a larger Caring Project to promote caring and retention of the nursing students.  Sigma Theta Tau, Beta Rho Chapter will pledge $1,000 toward this project, and the School of Nursing is requesting the consideration of the Nursing Alumni Association to also pledge $1,000 to assist with the expenses.  After discussion, Kathy Hutson made a motion to pledge $1,000 toward the Living Room Caring Project.  The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

Alumni Council Update

Kathy Hutson reported that the next Council meeting will be January 10, 2004.

Alumni Association Update

Krug reported that the BSU Alumni Association is working on end-of-the-year projects.  BSUAA 2004 calendars are being mailed.

Other Business

Cynthia Wade has resigned from the Nursing Alumni Board and a replacement will be needed for the 2004-2005 Board slate.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 10, 2004, 5:30 p.m., Alumni Center Board Room.  Agenda items will include:  Award recipients selection, Scholarship recipients selection, 2004 Nursing Alumni Banquet, May 2004 Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Community Project update, and 2004-2005 Board slate.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.  Dinner followed at 909 Grille, Restaurant, Muncie.
