Jim Grim, Maisto, and Pam Records will coordinate games centered around game shows and tie them in to journalism.  Lesley Stedman will coordinate door prizes; and Katrina Petre will coordinate a memorabilia display.  Records volunteered to design a postcard as a preliminary mailer to be sent to all journalism alumni.  Appreciation was expressed to Pam and Mark Records for their time and effort in designing the postcard.  It has been printed and 5,536 were mailed.  A flyer, which will include details and a reservation form, is being formulated and targeted for mailing at the end of April.  Shepperd said that the current media alumni list will be coded and updated, then another clean list will be used for the flyer mailing.  Details will also be available on the BSUAA Web site, with a Journalism Department link.  Advertisement and registration will also be published in the Spring issue of Phoenix and the May 2003 issue of the Ball State Alumnus.  The committee will meet briefly following the board meeting.

Chicago Event—Shepperd presented information regarding Architecture and Historical Cruise Tours.  There is an opening Saturday, August 9, 2003.  The tours run 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and run 1 1/2 hours along the north, south, and main branches of the river.  Cookies, muffins, coffee, and soft drinks are available.  The group rate for 20+ people is $9.  The Historical tour is chartered at $600 per hour and runs along the Lake.  Bar service is available.

Weaver reported that Tony Mejeri has offered space at the Chicago Tribune for a reception.  He will make all the arrangements and the only cost to us will be the food.

Following discussion the board agreed to have the event on August 9 with a Cruise Tour and for Weaver to pursue a reception at the Tribune.  Lodging will need to be reserved for the board.

Department Update

Weaver reported that there is a grant from the Knight Foundation to enable the department to again host the ASNE editor's workshop.

New faculty include Vince Filak, advisor to the Daily News; Stephen Quinn, who will work with the convergence program; and an advertising person, a gentleman from Korea who is currently working through details of a visa in order to work here.

Dan Waechter said that details are in place to have the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Sun-Sentinel participate with classes at Ball state. A Sun-Sentinel newsroom connection with journalism will be similar to the Chicago Tribune project. It will be part of the advanced news seminar project. Some Ball State student will travel to Ft. Lauderdale to make presentations, perhaps to be published. This is the first stage of what is hoped to be a long-term partnership.

J-Day is April 25. The numbers this year are slightly down, but still are healthy. This has always been an excellent tool for recruiting students.

The department plans a fall rollout for the Digital News Project, a Lilly-sponsored program which will draw news content from both TCOM and journalism.

Weaver reported that the department has a considerable amount of research in process. One example is Mark Popovich, who  is working on a digital project concerning the Middletown Studies program. The project will extend through the summer and will include information on how people use digital media. On another note, Popovich will be at the London Centre during the fall semester.

Weaver mentioned the April 15 performance of "Freedom Sings," to be presented in Emens Auditorium. She acknowledged Gene Policinski for making possible the excellent opportunity for Ball State.

Alumni Council Update

Jim Grim reported that he had attended his first Alumni Council meeting February 8. Grim said he was impressed with the amount of work that was accomplished at the meeting.

In a report from the Board of Trustees, Grim said the board would be working with budget issues in the coming weeks, largely due to the lack of state funding, and will discuss and likely find solutions through tuition and room and board rate increases.

The Alumni Association is in sound financial shape, though it faces challenges in the coming months with budget cuts.

Organizations within the Association are planning and conducting many programs and events and journalism is one of the outstanding groups. Our structure and what we accomplish are commendable.

Other Business

Weaver said she hoped the board was proud of the award recipients honored today at the Journalism Awards Luncheon and that any feedback from the board is appreciated.  Shepperd expressed genuine appreciation to Weaver and the Journalism Department for a very successful awards program.  The nationally and international  representation, is unmatched.
