Update on Indianapolis Center
Scott Truex, Director of CAP:IC, gave a report on the building, goals, and projects of the CAP Indianapolis Center. The building is currently being shared with the regional center office and CAP does not pay any rent or utilities for the space. CAP has used this location since June of 2001 and will remain in the space through December 2003.
The mission of the Indy Center is to create excitement and identity with CAP, and to extend talent and resources from Muncie to Indianapolis. The center is partnership based and CAP is trying to add value to existing efforts. As part of the mission, the center is working on partnership expansion. Currently, as part of this expansion, the guest lecture series that are presented at Ball State on Mondays will be available on DVD and shown at the center. This year has mainly been about getting people in the door. The center has started to receive calls to be in partnerships instead of having to look for them.
Scott discussed the calendar of events and the fact that the center has become a meeting place for many entities, which is a great way to get Ball State some exposure. The calendar consists of meetings, lunch chats, and even classes. In addition, Ball State and Indiana University are involved in a curriculum sharing mode.
Long term goals of the center include establishing a framework for activities, and the Neutral Ground Concept, which is coined by “Indianapolis By Design”, where the center works with the Mayor’s office so that ideas can be shared, partnerships with groups can be formed, and professionals and community people can come together. In a sense, the center will act as a visitor’s center to display what is going on in Indianapolis.
Update from the College
Joe Bilello discussed both the good news and the challenges that the department is facing. Positive aspects include promising student portfolio reviews, eCAP, the growing efforts from the Indy Center, receiving national ranking, technology improvements, and the accreditation of the M.Arch program. In addition, CAP still has the best entering GPA’s and is the most selective college on campus. The strategic plan was reviewed by faculty and showed that it affirms enduring values and identifies new values.
Some challenges that the college faces include being small in size compared to other colleges, and the fact that the building cannot readily accommodate growth. Another challenge is that CAP Indy’s support is provisional. The building agreement has been extended to December, but is still challenging in terms of budgeting. The center needs a permanent home and permanent funding. With that in mind, Joe has informed the advisory board to pursue two strategies – (1) “CAP as a part of a consortium Indianapolis Design Center” and (2) “a CAP Indy center in which we are the leaders of a partnering effort relying on our own initiative”. Imagination, influence, and support are asked of all board members.
Joe then discussed some upcoming events including upcoming guest lectures, the budget presentation to university leadership, alumni events in Washington D.C. and Louisville, the Arts Walk on Walnut Street with grand opening of MUDS, student exchange programs, and meetings that the college will be hosting.
Alumni Day Preparation
The date of Alumni Day has been moved from the spring to the fall. There are currently 12 people in the awards pool, and board members are encouraged to submit nominations for both the Outstanding Alumni Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award. The awards committee will meet before the spring meeting to discuss the awards and presentations.
Teresa Jeter-Newburn passed around a copy of the survey that will be mailed out to CAP alumni in regards to Alumni Day. The board agreed that a deadline should be added to the survey in order to generate a quicker response. Information should be gathered before the spring meeting in order to set a date for Alumni Day.
Continuing Education Survey
With input from the CAP Leadership council (Chairs, dean and associate dean), David Kiel led CAP’s effort to put together a survey with three questions, including (1) Are you interested in Continuing Education courses? (2) Are others interested? and (3) Are you willing to teach? Currently, there have been 172 responses. The enabling legislation for mandatory continuing education for Architecture and Landscape Architecture will likely be passed this year.
Update on the Alumni Communication Initiative
Michel Mounayar reported that the university has just completed installation of the poly-com camera, which now provides the opportunity for someone to dial in and listen to lectures live. There are future hopes to be able to participate in a jury from a desktop.
CAP is currently working with University Relations on the new website to compliment the printed materials, which should be up by the end of the semester. More extensive portfolios of students and alumni will be included on the new site.
Report from the BSU Alumni Council
Ernie Krug reported that Tom DeWeese and Hollis Hughes, Board of Trustees representatives, discussed the tuition increase, enrollment limits, charges, and funding for the university.
A new constituent group, the Cardinal Football Alliance, has gained membership in the Alumni Council.
The Ball State Federal Credit Union will remain the corporate sponsor for the Alumni Association. This is a continuation of the first venture into retaining an outside source for funding.
The next Alumni Council meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2003.
Vote to fund CAP as AIA/CES Provider
Ron Taylor made a motion to accept the decision to fund $500 for CAP to remain an AIA/CES provider. The motion was seconded by Jennifer Milliken and approved by voice vote.
Interior Architecture/Recommendation Letter Signing Party
The completed letter that Jamie Lake and Diana Brenner composed was passed around and signed by each board member.
New Business/Areas of Discussion
Architecture as Core Education Requirement
The board debated as to whether Ball State should offer a general Architecture course as a core curriculum class. A dilemma brought up was the fact that if this class was added, CAP would need to provide faculty for what could possibly be a 300+ student class, and in general faculty in the department are not interested in a class of that size. The board did agree that offering a class from Architecture would be a beneficial addition.
Next Meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. in the Alumni Center.
The meeting adjourned at 12:06 p.m.
