Update from the College
Dean Bilello reported that Ball State's architecture program has been ranked 13th in the nation, improving one spot over last year's rating.
Master of Urban Design classes begin March 1 at the Indy Center. A list of guest lectures can be found on CAP's Web site. The lecture on March 1 will be Webcast at both the Indy Center and on campus. The guest lecturer is Daniel Libeskind.
Other new activities for spring semester include the debut of the new Web site, interior program meetings at the Indy Center, forum series for faculty, and discussions on enrollment, scholarships in college, and the role of CAP in campus planning.
Michel Mounayar gave an overview of the new Web site. The site has been completely updated for the first time since it was created in the mid-1990s. The program running the Web site is Vignette, which is used by most departments on campus. Additional graphic improvements and site refinements will be planned.
CAP: IC Update
Scott Truex reported on the new CAP: IC monthly e-newsletter. Areas covered in the first issue include lunch chats, urban design workshops, and a Regional Center Plan 2020 update.
Truex suggested the board send a thank you note to the Mayor and City of Indianapolis for the use of the center's current location. By the end of February, the Indianapolis Center will have been in the current location for 33 months. Both CAP and the Indianapolis Center are working to make IC permanent in Indianapolis. Probable location for the center's move is the Victoria Center.
The Indianapolis Center has had a big impact on the Regional Center Plan. IC will continue to be an activity and development resource for the plan.
BSU Alumni Council Report
Doug Reddington reported on the Alumni Council meeting held in January. The search for the university's next president is underway. Finance funding is still a challenge due to the economy. The death of the student during the fall semester was discussed.
Ernie Krug announced that the 2004 Alumni Council president is Wayne Estopinal. Estopinal is the Alumni Association representative on the presidential search committee.
40th Year Anniversary
Dean Bilello reported that a year-long celebration for the college's 40th anniversary will begin in January 2005. During the year there will be guest lectures, displaying of alumni and faculty work, and special recognition day for the actual anniversary on March 23. Alumni Day will be centered on the anniversary.
Charles Sappenfield will be the honorary chairman for the anniversary year events. The Alumni board will assist in the planning of activities.
The year long celebration has been divided into five areas. Alumni board members volunteered to work with each area:
- Exhibitions -- Ron Taylor
- Lecturers -- Michael Hollibaugh
- Special Events -- Teresa Jeter-Newburn, Jennifer Milliken and Jamie Lake with Mike McKay assisting with the event in the fall
- Alumni Communications -- Doug Reddington (Kate Webber will assist with the monthly e-newsletter)
- Monograph & Publications -- Scott Truex and Diana Brenner
Ernie Krug suggested using the Alumnus magazine as a tool for the planning process. The dean will send a letter to alumni letting them know that if they are interested in having their information in the monograph, they will need to send the information by e-mail to CAP.
Continuing Education Support
Michel Mounayar reported on continuing education activities at the Indianapolis Center. Urban Planning classes offer credits which go towards a master's degree, while others are for learning credits. Learning credits are offered for all guest lectures and lunch chats.
