Working Overtime
by Ryan Falquist
Whether he is hosting the post-game call-in show, Pacers Overtime, on WIBC in Indianapolis, or sideline reporting for the Ball State Sports Network, radio personality Kevin Lee, '93, knows what he is talking about.
Lee, in his eighth season with the Pacers Radio Network, also reports for the WNBA's Indiana Fever, and the Indiana High School basketball and football state championships. He broadcasts Ball State women's and men's basketball and football games, and finds time during racing season to work for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
A telecommunications major in college, Lee found that the training he received helped him tremendously. Currently working for Emmis-owned WIBC 1070-AM radio station in Indianapolis, he says that he wouldn't be where he is today without the direction he received while attending Ball State. "One of the great things about the TCOM department at Ball State is the instruction and direction students receive. The equipment that Ball State uses is the best anyone will see in a career," Lee says, also pointing to the advantage of the hands-on experience the university offers.
Lee began his radio work at Ball State's WBST, then moved to WMDH in New Castle. Working up to 30 hours a week and taking a full course load didn't bother Lee. "To be successful in this business, you need to be working in it and getting hands-on training," Lee explains.
During his senior year at Ball State, Lee obtained an internship at the radio station he grew up listening to, WIBC. His work there, coupled with staying in touch with on-air personalities Bob Lamey and Vince Welch, '86, helped him land a permanent job with the station.
Though constantly working football, basketball, and racing events throughout the year, Lee takes time in the summer to vacation with his wife Stacey (Riggins), '92, and their son Jackson.
Looking back at what has been a solid ten-year, post-graduate career in radio, Lee recognizes what it takes to be successful. "The more marketable you are, the better," he says. "If you are starting out, do news, DJ, do whatever you can to make yourself as versatile as possible. You cannot be too picky in this business.
Pet Smart
by Laurel Peffer
Shannon McConnell, '92, graduated from Ball State's entrepreneurship program knowing that he wanted to be his own boss, but didn't know how to accomplish that. One day a PBS special featuring the alpaca caught his attention and his life has not been the same. Alpacas are fiber-producing animals much like sheep, but resemble small llamas. They originate from South America, and have grown in popularity in the United States over the past two decades.
McConnell spent two years researching the animal before creating a marketing plan for his business and finding investors for his first two alpacas. Since then he has expanded his farm, located in Albany, to almost 80 alpacas and has experienced abundant success. “It is rewarding at the end of the day to see one of my new babies up and walking around,” he says. Alpacas produce luxury fibers, which can be made into anything from sweaters to blankets and even teddy bears. Alpaca fleece is softer than sheep’s wool and is comparable to mohair or cashmere. An ounce of alpaca fiber is worth $3. Alpacas are shown annually in the spring and produce on average four pounds of fiber. In addition to the almost $200 per animal per year that can be obtained from its fiber, an alpaca at its prime is worth $7,000 to $40,000 according to McConnell, who says he primarily markets the fiber locally and over the Internet during the Holiday Season.
McConnell credits much of his success to the business training he received at Ball State, suggesting that it aided him in creating the marketing plans that have helped his operations succeed. He also credits his involvement in student organizations like Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and the Baptist House with help him to gain the confidence to work with others. “It doesn’t matter how book-smart you are, you won’t get anywhere without people skills,” he says.
Not only have his public relation skills helped McConnell to succeed in the alpaca industry, but also his love and understanding for animals have benefited him. Since he was a small child, McConnell has had pets and has always found an interest in them, but it was the alpaca that truly struck his fancy. One attraction to alpacas was the fact that they are never slaughtered for meat. “They [the alpacas] are all my pets,” he says, adding that he identifies each of the 80 alpacas in his herd by name.
McConnell’s motivation is his independence from a typical nine-to-five job. “I want to be able to have a job that I can do at home so I can spend time with my family,” he says, explaining that they are involved in the farm.
As an extension to his business, McConnell also has involved the local 4-H community in his farm. He offers children the opportunity to lease an alpaca as a 4-H project for a year. The youth can come to the farm every month and work with their animals in preparation for the Delaware County Fair in the summer.
“A lot of kids don’t have avenues to work with animals anymore,” McConnell says of the reasoning behind his dedication to the program. “It teaches them leadership and confidence when they can work with a seemingly wild animal and teach it to do what they want,” he adds.
McConnell says the alpaca industry is the perfect fit for him, and looks at the prospect of expanding in the future. He would like to focus primarily on the fiber aspect of the business with the hope also of bringing more interest in alpacas to the area.
