Career In Radio Sounds Good!

Drew Carey, '87, can remember sitting in the classroom and listening to guest speakers while an undergraduate at Ball State more than 20 years ago.

It was there he gained knowledge to turn a dream that began at the age of 12 into a successful career. Carey works for radio stations Q95 and WNDE in Indianapolis, where his work days often extend into work-nights. Responsible for the daily operations for WNDE, he is on call 24 hours a day. As the producer of The Bob and Tom Show, Carey corresponds with stations across the country where the show is heard.

Carey credits Ball State with preparing him for his career in radio. "I have told people that I wouldn't be where I am today without Ball State," he says. He also expresses admiration to his parents. "My mother and father were just the best," he says, explaining that he gained organizational skills and a strong work ethic from them.

His avid interest in radio started during his junior year at Pendleton Heights High School, where he learned the basicsfrom cutting and splicing tape to spinning records and being an on-air personality. From that experience, Carey realized he wanted to go to a school that would help him enter the professional radio industry.

"I knew I wanted to work in radio and be in charge," Carey says. After careful consideration and advice from a school counselor, Carey decided to attend Ball State. "Having worked in radio some before I started college allowed me to take full advantage of the more advanced opportunities at the radio and television stations on campus," Carey says.

In addition to his radio work, Carey and his wife Peri plan to open their own interior decorating business. But for now, Carey is content in his current career. "I can see myself in radio in ten years. I have goals for myself in this business, and right now I'm building for the future," Carey says.

Despite his busy schedule, Carey still finds time to return to Ball State to speak to students. He stresses the importance of gaining a broad experience. "I tell them to do a little bit of everything [which makes them more marketable]," he says.

Carey believes that learning innovative technologies is something that Ball State students should take advantage of. He also advises students to keep learning once their college time is complete. "There is a misnomer that once you leave school you are done learning. You never stop learning. In this business, if you stop learning new technologies, then you might as well get out of it," Carey says.

Carey attributes his own success to the same values that he shares with students: lay a foundation, work hard to achieve your goals, and be persistent.

Ball State Grad Acts On His Dreams

Warren Jackson, '93, has always found a way to entertain an audience. Whether it is in front of a group of elementary school children, on camera in the telecommunications department, or on stage in a theatrical production, Jackson has always been in the limelight.

Jackson entered Ball State as a telecommunications major with a minor in theatre. He did not realize his passion for acting would turn into a career until his senior year.

He claims he was first interested in acting at the age of seven. "My stuffed Pooh Bear and I acted out some really great scenes," he says. It was not until he was in his high school's show choir that he discovered his desire to be on stage.

As a theatre minor at Ball State, Jackson participated in several productions, but did not make it onto the university stage until the end of his sophomore year in The Clouds. From that point Jackson balanced his busy schedule of acting, being a resident assistant, and keeping up with his demanding TCOM studies.

During Jackson's senior year he realized that telecommunications was not what he wanted to do. "I wasn't happy. I didn't feel I had prepared myself well enough with that major to enter the job market," he says. After several meetings and many discussions with counselors, Jackson laid out a plan to graduate one year later with a degree in theatre performance. "My teachers and peers provided me with the tools and support, the courage, I needed to begin building my career as an actor," he says. It is that group of people, he acknowledges as helping him to not only become an actor, but also an artist.

After leaving Ball State Jackson performed on stage while pursuing his master's degree at the University of Arizona. Currently, he keeps his passion for the theatre alive by acting out lessons to a room full of fifth-grade students. As a teaching assistant, Jackson uses his theatrical skills to entertain his classes. "I rely on storytelling tools to create a world for them in which they might understand the subject better," he says. He is also an advocate of literacy and operates the Story Bus, a traveling library for a Chicago pre-literacy program. He drives the bus of books throughout the Chicago Public School System reading to children and promoting literacy.

Jackson still finds time for the stage and says he plans to continue his career in acting, "The theatre is such a needy mistress. I hope to continue to challenge myself and take my work to another level," he says. Eventually he would like to teach theatre at the university level, but for now he is content with his work with school-age children.
