Brady Hoke, who graduated in 1982, was named Ball State's head football coach in December. Hoke (center) is congratulated by Ed Shipley, executive director of the Alumni Association and 1968 bachelor's degree graduate, and Greg Pyle, class of 1985, who serves as this year's Cardinal Varsity Club president.

Every situation we experience, every individual we meet helps to shape us, giving us different perspectives, opening new horizons, blending our past with our present.

Our lead feature details the university's program in social work. Boasting nearly 1,500 graduates, the social work department has alumni in the field who are shaping and improving communities through their service and leadership. They are making a difference for others while themselves being positively affected through their experiences. Read The Power of Outreach.

Dan Kaiser owns and operates a one-man shoe repair business, but the Ball State graduate has a passion for studying the stars. His time at Ball State had a definite impact on his current avocation. See Star Search.

As 2002 was coming to a close, Ball State announced the hiring of a new head football coach. Alumnus Brady Hoke, most recently on the coaching staff of the University of Michigan, was named to lead the Cardinals.

President Brownell has taken the Ball State message to numerous locations in recent months. He describes the Building Better Communities tour in Comment.

Each of us has the power to build a better community wherever we may be. As we, individually, go about the business of affecting the lives of others, we must keep in mind that our actions and deeds will be observed and - if we're lucky - imitated. We offer but a few prospective resolutions or if you prefer, words of wisdom for the new year, gathered from a wealth of sources over an equal wealth of time:

A person is not old until regrets take the place of dreams. Don't grow old.

Always speak the truth and you will never need to be concerned about your memory.

Never forget that you are a part of the people who can be fooled some of the time.

Don't clutter your mind with little things; there won't be any room for the big things.

Live well, laugh often, love much, and remember that all people smile in the same language.

What you do with the new year will be determined one day at a time. May you have peace, happiness, and prosperity in the days ahead.
